Air Springs Front & Rear Struts |
|
Been a busy day, fitted front struts and have rears yet to do. Taken her out for a spin and she feels firmer in the front so I think it will be worth it once I get the rears done but like a I said she feel much firmer in the front as it is and less body roll, also going over small bumps in the road you notice them less.
I'm hoping the rears will be easier to do than the fronts or is that just wishful thinking? Dale

They were all the same price £150 per corner, looking at doing the rears early next week but rear nearside looks like it could be a challenge . Dale

I'm in the same position as you, I did the fronts last weekend but it's been too wet to attempt the rears since... maybe tomorrow...
As you say, the patter over bumps at slow speed has disappeared and the car feels altogether tauter and more comfortable.
As regards the rears being easier, I think I know better what the job entails. My worry is that my front lowers have been replaced once and my rear lowers haven't so the lower wishbone bolt may be harder to remove... Having said that I've now invested in some straight ratchet spanners and I perciev that being able to lower the spare wheel may help getting to the inner bolt. I have spent the last week applying WD40 to all the bolts. -------------------------------------------------------------------

I've just replaced all my shocks and the rears are easier. Just remove he spare tyre and you have good access all round you can get inside the wheel well and clearly see everything.
My lower bolts were a bit rusted up, but soaking with wd40 made it fairly easy.
My only problem wasn't the top bolts, but the idly airline nuts!! Giggity - Giggity

On the front I dropped the Strut down a little after undoing the top 3 nuts and the had clear access to the air pipe fitting. Dale

Yes, I did try that as it was recommended by a few people, but I thought it put a strain on the pipe as you had to bend it a bit to get in. However, different strokes for different folks as long as they all work. Giggity - Giggity

I remember one one car, the nuts were very very corroded. Rusted away to something smaller than 14mm, but than a 13mm.
Irwin bits wouldn't get a grip, as you couldnt hammer the socket onto the nut.
In the end, I put axle stands under the body, undone the body mount bolts , and lowered the chassis down. Inserted Irwin bit + ratchet, jacked the chassis back up and jammed the whole lot against the floor. Came off after that My D3 Build Thread

Well I have been out with the WD40 on the back nuts every day this week so come next tuesday I won't need a spanner I'll be able to undo them with my fingers. Dale

I'm in Bagenalstown next weekend, so if you need help still by then let me know! I've just finished my rears, apart from an unscheduled need for a droplink it was fairly straightforward. The top nuts ARE easier to get to compared to the front but, is it the dryer for the compressor(?), gets in the way a bit on the nearside. I'm glad I've got a decent set of ratchet spanners! -------------------------------------------------------------------
