4.4V8 High mileage - what issues

what issues would a high mileage (174K miles 2005) 4.4V D3 likely to have.

what issues should one look out for if buying, which is related specifically to the Petrol Model?

Throttle body clean, coolant pipe at front of engine could split, wrecking the engine, correct oil (no tdv6 usual oil),.inyector clean in few occasions.

Rest is same as usual here... Whistle

In EEUU no more general issues for this engine afaik.

I wish this help you.

Thumbs Up

I seem to remember a couple of US posts about engine rattle on start up. Something to do with worn variable valve timing mechanism from memory Dunc.

Wasn't there a fuel tank recall on early V8s?

Hi Dunc, Yes V8 seems pretty good except for water leaks. It would appear that some of the plastics used in the cooling system pipework deteriorates until it cracks up.

Here is one such post, although I am sure a more dedicated search would find more. There is a plastic elbow in the system somewhere that breaks and dumps all the coolant I think. I am sure I have seen a thread where its replaced with a brass pipe from B&Q plumbing section!

I reckon your safer with the V8. More cylinders, but less complicated than the diesel. No egr's, No Turbo, Better sound, More power.

Downsides, thirsty (debatable on low mileage), less knowledge on the forum, probably doesn't like swimming!

If I was after a second Disco for second car, I'd have one in a heartbeat.

From memory, I remember something about a coolant "T" thingly that cracks and spill coolant all over the engine

When I look back at the repairs on my TDV6 I wish I'd bought a V8!

my Thermostat housing , lower part, cracked at 115 Thou. needed to be replaced as a whole part as it comes with a thermostat itself.that is one thing to look for, another thing is a bleeder plastic T on top of the engine , order the insulating cover as it cracks from heat over time and spits coolant all over.Primary and secondary belts should be replaced s well as spark plugs . Two timing chains are self adjusting so they should not need replacing..Throttle body should be cleaned up thru injection and induction service with BG products and BG 44K poured in the tank after service along with oil change .spark plugs will get weaken after that , so it is better to wait with them to change ,AFTER inn. and induction service Thumbs Up

If you want to have a look around one and give it a drive I have one and am probably not that far away from you. More than happy with mine, very refined and let's you take the gaps in traffic. Have an LPG conversion on it also as I did on my RR.

just looking at a D3 as a second car - for offroading etc. decided not to use the new D4 offroad.they are too blingy and the wheel arches etc get scratched and also the interiors and intercooler etc is more difficult to clean.

seen a few V8s for sale and they seen to be lower prices than the TDV6
