when I learned to drive my father gave me a cortina(manual) my father also would allow me to use his granada(big cortina)which was an auto and he said jam your left leg behind right or under seat.

worked for me
that clutch muscle memory is strong.
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Company car is a manual, D3 is auto, can drive one then the other without any problems.

Possibly one or two, but think that's just me getting old and the brain going.

I would be in the same mind as you. Manual all my driving life, a couple of goes of an auto but was wary especially at junctions, hill starts etc.

Good luck as there are so many autos out there it can't be too hard.

Can it?

Thumbs Up

I also worried about joining club auto, even had to ask the guy at the garage how to test drive it Embarassed but you will get it straight away. I love it now, you just point the stealing wheel and the disco does the rest, sooooo relaxing. My only bug bear is auto boxes always sound like they are over reving.

Initially I was pressing the imaginary clutch pedal with the Auto when coming to a stand but now I swap between vehicle, Series One Land Rover with Double declutching to D3 Auto with no problems. Must admit I like the paddles on the D4.

I went from a manual Freelander to an auto. It's easy.

You learn how to adapt very easily, plus your left foot gets some nice space to enjoy.
Once you get used to it, you'll wonder why you never did it sooner.
Auto for traffic is simple, just use your foot to work the brakes, let off brakes when cars ahead move away.
Would NEVER go back to a manual for a daily driver car!

For hill starts, i find my car holds it's position in D and doesn't roll back, so hills are easy.
Only ever been in 1 situation where i wished i had a manual and that was on a off road speed course, the auto reaction time from going from R to D and setting off was costing me a couple of seconds.
Plus for off roading, you can go from low to high range on the move at low speeds. Simply knock into N, flick switch and go either hi/low and move back to drive. Very handy that!
 In loving memory of FA54WSK.

Rest well old friend, your work is done.

Going from manual to auto isn't a problem, it's when up you go back the other way you'll have issues Shocked
The number of times I've almost stalled SWMBO's car because I've forgotten you can't leave it in gear when coming up to traffic lights! Thud
Go for it! Auto on these bad boys is the only way to go Thumbs Up

I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I bought my first auto, a Volvo S60 T5, when I broke my left foot. Kind of forced the transition, really. I had no urge whatsoever to use the foot in any capacity whatsoever!

But that made me see the light. Since then, I've only bought one manual for myself, and that was because we moved out into the sticks and needed something fabulous on fuel, so ended up with a diesel Golf.

SWMBO won't drive a manual at all now if she can get away with it.

I got a telling off from the warning system when I tried left foot braking. I was trying to settle it down for a corner whilst keeping some power going by having my right foot slightly on the accelerator.

I'm used to autos, but I sometimes still want to reach for the gear stick at junctions. Rolling Eyes
