White Smoke after having car washed

Hi All

New to here just got my disco last night private sale guy really helpful gave all documents and only serviced discovery 3 at Marshalls in Cambridge.

Drove home last night with my wife following no issues to write about. Had to fill up as fuel very low and I wanted to see how the MPG works as I will be towing my caravan with it. Today I filled up with diesel 80.36 litres and then took it off to be hand washed cleaned and polished. Had a little smoke this morning but nothing to write home about. After car was washed I drove home down a due carriageway and noticed smoke not a lot at the moment. Got home put car on drive then my wife came back and as she is going to use it I gave her a quick over view.
Started up and left it ticking over then got her to accelerate that's when we had quite a lot of white Smoke I guess coming out. Not sure what this means but I checked oil level that seems high over full level indicator on dip stick water cooler low but clear. Oil cap is also clear no white creamery colour just black oil.

Only 2 things have happend today fill up with diesel and the wash which they did use jet washes to wash and shampoo the car all over wheels tyres arches the lot.

Now I am wondering if water got into air filter, exhaust or generally somewhere else.

Or have I got a problem!! Given I picked the disco up at St Neots near peretrborough and drove through Essex back home to Berkshire possibly did 150 plus or so miles did not notice anything then so its today its smoking like a trooper

Any Ideas Please

Terry

Hi Sailterry and welcome!
I wouldn't have thought that your problem relates to washing the car.
However, if there is too much oil in the engine as you mention, I would pump some out to bring it to max level. This could cause serious problems to your engine.
BTW, since we are talking about a D3, maybe you should post under the D3 section of the forum, where you may get more answers from other D3 owners, although most of us love our Discoveries so much that we read most of the threads! Smile

I had a works Vito that was overfilled with oil and it put out a James bondesque smoke screen, with the potential damage that overfilling can cause Id be looking to get that sorted soonest. May well cure the smoking too
I started off with nothing and Ive still got most of it left.

White smoke = water or diesel; Blue smoke = oil.
To make 80 liters of diesel had to have an empty tank and maybe the pump has sucked up dirt on the bottom going to clog filters and injectors. If the smoke persists and the levels of oil and water are ok would try to change the filter and to use an injector cleaner.
It could also be water entered the exhaust from the exhaust but can not be entered while in the air filter so I do not think it can come with an external washing.
These are my two cents

I think the key thing is that you said you let it idle for a while! Used to see this when I worked in a dealer when the vehicles had idled to clear the ice on the windscreens in the morning! A quick run and it would clear and not happen again until idled for a while! I suspect this is the same if it doesn't persist. Always put it down to slight over fuelling while cold and idling and fuel sitting in exhaust!

Hi thanks

Yes the tank probably very low near empty anyway got a mechanic friend and he connected a computer and viewed the issues. The disco had a replacement on the ns egr replaced following smoking from previous owner. He had it fixed by land rover dealer Marshals of Cambridge on the 26 March this year or not as the case maybe!!!.

They tested the injectors and all were ok but on the readout today injectors 3 & 4 were very low 600 & 900 while all the rest were around 1422 or there abouts.

We checked the smoke and it most definitely has diesel content. So we think its injectors, going to remove them on Wednesday and send to specialist on Thursday to check and maybe refurb possibly the 2 that seem to be running low on readout.

Interestingly after a few minutes and a few miles the smoking reduces but it's still smokes more it should.

Not going to use now just got to drive 7 miles to workshop then my mechanic can sort, he is going to drop out some oil to reduce level. I may get him to do a complete oil change while he's working on it.

The annoying situation is not the problem with the smoking but it is the fact that I bought this car from a really good guy totally honest and like me has very limited knowledge of mechanics but trust the people we instruct. He had a problem where the car smoked and it failed the MOT, so he booked it into Marshalls to fix the problem they tested the ejectors, replaced the ns egr total bill £1300 ish. Now the repsonse we got from Marshalls this morning when my mechanic telephoned them was negative and stated the previous owner did not instruct them to replace the injectors and therefore is not thier problem.

I find it amazing that they can make a statement like that given the previous owner told them the symptoms and was told all fixed pay us your money. We only telephoned them to get a better understanding of the problem not a refund or fix it as I am in Ascot they are in Cambridge. What they did tell us was when they tested again after the replacement they could not get a 100% fault finding response.

You think they would gave looked at the data and taken another course of action anyway it's my problem now as it was a private sale but to be fair to the previous owner he has offered to help financially to fix.

Not worried about the cost the issue for me is to get the disco running sweet as I need it a couple of weeks to tow our caravan.

These Disco are loverly cars hopefully be back on the road in Ernest end of next week

That sounds like typical main dealer carry on. £1300 (Don't know if this included anything else) to replace an EGR valve, which is highway robbery in the first place and to cap it all they've not even solved the issue!! And now the cars off their books so to speak they're being as helpful as ever.

Depending on the year of the Disco, blanking the EGR's is a cheap and simple cure to avoid further issues with them. Injectors not quite so simple but it sounds like you've got that in hand.

Hope Disco ownership smooths itself for you and once it's sorted you'll soon forget the issues you had.
Good luck.

Well it's been a little over a week since ownership and disco is now fixed, it was a faulty injector on test we had quite a few faults on the readout, lots of white smoke anyway injectors were sent to a specialist and were tested 5 passed all test the faulty passed the first test but the idle test it failed as it kept dripping and did not shut off.

New one was ordered and replaced all passed and diagnostic test are all clear £570 lighter but very happy with work carried out (even fitted my new tow trust tow bar within that price). My mechanic also dropped out some of the oil to bring it down to just about full.

What I can't get my head around giving this car has just had Marshalls of Cambridge carry out all the work to fix this issue which the previous owner had asked them to fix and notwithstanding the faulty injector how can they allow a vehicle with at least 20mm showing on the dip stick over the highest level of oil!!

To much reliance on plug and play I think. Anyway I am a happy bunny this morning disco on drive tow bar fitted now to get the car washed again Thumbs Up
