Who to believe ?

I took this picture from a other topic, because I have exactly the same issue.

Went to LR this morning for a diagnose, they came up with one fault - P186D - rear e-diff
I ask them what should be done to fix it and the cost.

The fix requires replacing the e-diff actuator - + 5 hours labor.

Back home I went through this site and found a topic from DiscoDunc having the similar fault.

Found the TSB no. LTB00200 regarding this DTC - P186D - no parts necessary but a re-calibration ?

Back to LR asking to speack to the chief mechanic , showed him the TSB , but he didn't know any thing about this TSB, his argument is that the computer will do all the necessary updates if necessary Question ,
but he was ready to look at this TSB for me , at that moment he turn around to the receptionist explaining my point and the receptionist responded by a NO, it is no more possible to re-calibrate E-diff
it had to be replaced !

Then I asked, how will you calibrate the new actuator then ? no need it calibrates automatically on new ones .

There I stand now Shocked Who and what to believe, and in any case why 5 hours to lift the car, undo 4 bolts and a switch, remove the motor, and refit the new one, ( one hour should be more then enough ).

Any experience or idées around ?

Thank you

it can re recalibrated with a software upgrade. mine was done and never had anymore problems.

what does the receptionist know about anything Laughing

it wasn't just recalibrating it - the software on the original had some bugs in it that were fixed.

as far as I know, its not an automatic update, it has to be requested, downloaded and applied.

Thank you Duncan,

That's what puzzles me, so I called one other LR dealer not to far away and asked if they could have a look
at this TSB for the P186D fault, got to call them back on monday PM, will see what they answer.

I have one other question, would a independant doing only works on LR have this software update possibility?

Went this morning to the other MAIN LR dealer, to see about this software update Whistle

Unbelievable, when I spoke about the E-diff, they didn't know what I was speaking about Rolling Eyes ,
they where always coming back to the sups.compressor, I had to explain that the e-diff is a motor
actuator above the rear diff., then a other bloke arrived ( age around the 50, telling me that he had 25 years experience as a mechanic )and starting to explain to me how a differential work Whistle ,
with his 25 year's experience, he didn't seem to know that a D3 could be fitted with a rear E-diff, then he
said this extraordinary phrase " HO, YES YOU HAVE A VERY RARE CAR " only a few have that option .

I didn't run away Yawn

Showing them the TSB I asked if it was possible to have the software update for only the e-diff ECU.

Got the same answer that at the first dealer, updates are done automatically when the computer is plugged on Exclamation

So, apparently it is not possible to know what software revision is in the ECU, and the only way to go
is to " crash " ( in french, english, dutch ) ( his words ) the software in the ECU.

I stayed calm and took a appointment in a weeks time to get the " crash " done.

Left the garage and since then I am wondering if I really need the ECU " crash ", the car is back to normal since yesterday so ...

Any suggestions Big Cry

Dead end Arrow

copy of LR answer:
In regards more specifically to your concern, in accordance with the latest version of the bulletin LTB00228v7 it does require the replacement of the rear differential locking motor assembly before the rear differential control module is then configured to the vehicle. The software update is specifically intended for the currently available components.

So as the car drives normally for the moment, I just have to hope ...
