Basically the graph curve will always show the most economical speed as 56mph - it's simple physics.
Though you will use less fuel per minute under 56mph, you need to drive for a longer time to reach your destination. Over 56mph you use more fuel per minute, but drive for less minutes. The cross over point where the efficiency is at it's best is, once again, 56 mph

I did try cruising at 56 but it's too slow for the car to stay in 6th, plus a little bit faster lets you get round the trucks.

yep, 56 is too slow - I would die of old age before I got to my destination Duncan

In my car it seems to get a very good MPG at 60. Once you get over 65 it starts heading south of 30MPG.
But at the end of the day life's too short and the D3 isn't, and was never meant to be, an economical vehicle.

why would you buy a discovery and then worry about economy? if the tank is big enough you will get there in one hit and not need refilling....
our porsche has such a small fuel tank - not helped by being 4wd and having a differential and driveshafts running through/under it- that the 190 mile trip we cover regularly in the land rover has to start with a full fuel tank and first job on arriving has to be to fill up....mostly we use the disco for the job. it does 85mph on cruise and returns around 27/8 mpg at that. no problem.Discovery 3 tdv6 HSE 2007

I look at it from the flip side of the coin. I've got all the time in the world so why rush? I find it relaxing driving at lower speeds and don't have to worry about Mr Plod and his speed gun/camera van. It's nice sitting in the comfy armchair with CC on and watch the world go past.

I'm with Del as life feels much better cruising along.
When I yearn for a speed rush I just strap into something a little more exciting.

Ok weird view ...
Whats the cost between the two
In other words if you get there an hour earlier and enjoy the journey twice as much at the extra MPH and it costs £12 more ...
Is that fun and smile worth the £12 .... or not
If you are on £20 an hour or more then you have only had to work for half an hour/forty mins..... for the couple of hours enjoyment ....
When I returned form Dundee I just drove home and didn't worry about fuel .... just the safety and enjoying the road ...

and driving D3 has also priceless intimidation factor
56MPH is OK but 86 is even better for a bit more dosh spent

On a typical 500 mile haul you'd take 1hr 40mins longer (60mph vs 75mph) and you'd save £11.52 (27mpg vs 30mpg & £1.369/ltr) so cost/extra time is £6.91/hour. Not really the issue for me (cost saving) but would pay for the breakie next morning if hotelling overnight, plus I don't get there mid afternoon & end up bored stupid.
Besides, I had enough of charging all round the country in my last job & nice to watch the suits blasting past. I've had one ulcer through overworking, no intention of getting another one.
