Best time/economy trade off speed

Long trip up to Manchester ahead tomorrow.

Common sense says that I should aim to travel slightly more slowly than my normal 85 cruise (say 80) and that the fuel saved will more than compensate for the 15 mins or so that adds to my journey time. (I base this on assuming I'll average 5 mph less and 3 mpg more as a result).

That got me wondering, what it I slowed further to say 75?

Don't get me wrong, the family's patience will not allow me to cruise at a steady 56 and it's not in my nature but clearly there's a tipping point somewhere where excess speed sends economy off the edge of the cliff.

Thoughts on where the real world sensible cruising speed should be set?

max economy seems to be at approx 50mph, but it would be a long and boring journey (but if your journey includes the M6, and big bit of it north of Brum is roadworks with 50mph speed limit anyway)

My D3 (manual) cruised most efficiently at a motorway speed of around 68mph Thumbs Up ....using the cruise control is less efficient also..steady inputs,watching the traffic ahead etc are all crucial too.

Can't agree more about the cruise control. On all our vehicles have always noticed that the cruise is quick to change down on a slight slope to maintain speed or hold a gear just one below where we would on the flat. We can look ahead something cruise can't and see that just past the small incline it is flat again or a slope and accept the few seconds of dropping a mile or two as it will recover quickly without needing to drop a gear and increase the rpm.

The main time we use cruise now is in the average speed check areas on the motorway to prevent a ticket. So easy to let the speed creep up as you flow with everyone else half of whom were sure do not understand the concept of "average" in the camera system.

75mph = 26 - 27mpg
60mph = 29 - 31mpg
Actual, not trip comp.

Mostly done on CC. Better when hot, worse when cold. Thumbs Up

Buy a Prius

Edited to add: The difference in MPG on these vehicles when you consider the real-world hassle of trying to get that extra few mpg out just isn't worth it.

If MPG is a concern then, for the small improvement you can make I'd suggest a different vehicle would be the only way to go.

We tow the tin tent at 60-65mph and get around 19-20mpg

Driving at circa 75mph we get low 30s

Top box and bars costs us 3-5mpg

My heavy right foot about 10mpg 8)

Tend to use the cruise control all the time, again convenience out weighs the minor gains

56mph is the most economical speed to cruise at, hence why most trucks are limited to 56mph

I tend to sit just under 70mph at about 1900rpm, I get about 31mph on that. I go between Preston & Solihull weekly.

Thumbs Up

Isn't the most economical speed the lowest speed that can be held in the highest gear?

and that's my inevitable response....despite setting off with good intentions, within 20 mins I'm bored and doing 85-90 with the cruise on

yesterday I was getting (according to the fuel comp)

steady 60mph : 34.5 mpg over 70 miles
70 - 80 : 29mpg over 25 miles

ive worked out the mpg manually on other occasions, and to be honest its very close to the what the fuel computer says - only +- 0.2 difference
