Disconnecting EGR Valves

Has anyone tried disconnecting the EGR valves.

This was a common modification on Series 2 Discos and improved performance and reduced lag. Was a simple case of pulling of the electrical lead & or vacume tube connected to The EGR valve. I suspect this would help reduce alot of the tunning issues ie vibration-harshness,lag, throttle response at low revs.

can't imagine it wouldn't need some ECU re-programming of some sort Horto, as I and others have had faulty EGR valve problems that have made the vehicle go into a bit of a restricted mode when they've been evident.
 and theeeeennn......???

IF EGR are stuck open it they fill combustion chamber with dirty air resulting in bad combustion which then feeds even dirtier air back into chamber, hence the poor performance with fault EGr valves. So not sure if computer will spit the dummy if EGR doest open (because its disconnected) or only when its faulty and sticks open causing all exhaust gas readings to go of the chart.

Has anyone actually tried disconnecting EGRs to see what happens?

Not had reason to do this with the D3, but had the misfortune to own a Freelander TD4 that used to open EGR valve at inopertune moments ie, just as I was about to pull out onto a busy main road, causing loss of turbo boost pressure, and it either died on me or caused an embarrassing and very dangerous power loss. As usual LR technical people (bless em), just didn't have a clue to what I believe was a software issue, but I got shot of it for the D3 in the end,as I dearly wanted to stay alive Rolling Eyes . The only way to stop it doing it, was to disconnect and blank off the vacuum pipe to the egr valve (thus disabling it closed). I looked into the possible effects that this may have on things long term, and from memory (it was a while ago I'm afraid), the conclusion I came to was that, having the valve inoperative could cause higher combustion temperatures under certain conditions, which could in turn shorten the life of the turbo / possibly engine as well. Therefore, even if it can be done on the D3, I personally wouldn't recommend doing it TBH.

Reviving this old thread, and in regards to a new/almost new TDV6 where the valves are not yet stuck open.
DG, What do you mean?
Will the engine ecu spit the dummy or just turn on the check engine light? Will all be forgiven when the connectors are reconnected?

If you search there are lots of threads and info on which engines can have the EGRs blanked off with no symptoms and which MYs may get errors and the check engine light turned on...personally I have my MY05 blanked with no negative effects and plenty of positive ones! Very Happy

I have no problems with blanking except perhaps for a new vehicle under warranty. Wondering if they could be unplugged except for services.

Pete ,

By plugging them back in ..would it clear all the faults ..or would you be left with a car still in limp home mode.

I want to test out a fault code reader ..and want to ba able to simulate a fault ..any idea's Question

I think it would correct its self after reconnecting them.
It will only flag the fault if open circut when disconnected and it will/should clear when it sees the circuit again.

Ive just removed the plug from one of mine and it didnt flag a fault with the mil lamp on, even after several starts.

Im not sure if its because my butterfly is removed and its still getting the correct air etc etc.or the drive cycle was to short.

Ill log it onto ids tomorrow to see if it shows this.

But i think you can play with your tool no problem by the looks of it.

Thanks Pete .

I have just removed the grey 6 pin plug of the one nearest the aux battery tray .Started the car ..no difference.
Started and stopped the car 6 times ..still all normal .No Mil lamp on Shocked

Drove round the block (about a mile ) no diffrence to normal driving ..still no fault lights ..very strange
