There have been numerous threads on the maximum distance achieved on a tank full of diesel.
The only way one can prove maximum mileage on a full tank of diesel is to run the tank dray, or very nearly dry.
The tank is a fixed, and standard size, so claimed maximum range is not very informative, what is useful is MPG, and that is better calculated from brimmed tank to brimmed tank, than from brimmed tank to almost empty.
D3s & D4s have of course fuel filters, but am I correct in thinking it's still not very wise to run the tank bone dry?

You are correct in thinking it's not a wise move to run your tank until it's dry.. You'd be suprised at the ammount of crap in the depths of your fuel tank.
You are certainly keen to get your exact tank range if you're considering it Discovery 2007 XS

If the car is otherwise serviceable you can indeed run it until it stops.
The designers did think about possible crud in the tank and the possibility of running dry. The pump circulates the entire contents to the engine and back every hour (minus the small bit you burn) and the fuel does the whole coarse filter to jet-assisted swirl pot thing before heading to the fine filter. When you perceive the car running out of fuel the D3 is just faking it and is actually hiding 4 litres in the system to avoid any damage.

People seem to forget that the fuel always comes from the bottom of the tank

I run mine out of diesel a few months ago, I was aiming for a fuel station 1/2 mile further up the road.
I had 5 miles range and it cut out on a roundabout. Filled with diesel and bled the system and it's been fine.
My best has been 511 miles on one tank.

I bet it didn't manage 700 miles to empty though
I've had well over 350 miles showing at above half tank on the gauge, but for some reason known only to the LR design engineers it would seem the 2nd 'half' is somewhat less that the 1st 'half' Never get mad - get even !!

RUNNING DRY ETC
Once, I filled my D2 tank with 50 litres of petrol. I had two ladies in the back of the car and they were both talking at me at the same time so I claim utter distraction with a small tinge of idiocy. To the local garage on back of recovery truck to be met by Jock the smiling proprietor who awarded me his numpty of the week prize. Once pumped out and refilled with diesel that D2 went better that when it was new...well nearly. I assumed that the tank, after a lot of miles, was contaminated with water and sundry cruddy elements and washing it out with petrol had actually done some good.
However, I do not recommend this as a normal part of the service schedule.
...At that point, the trip was averaging 33.9 mpg...

My usual “distance driven“ + “distance left“ usually add up to just over 500miles...
That is of course, 'til you get down to the last 100miles, which tends to fluctuate between sod all and enought to get home...
I swear I can head occasional giggling coming from behind the dash at this point... flickr

The trip in my D3 is one of the most accurate I have had in ANY car
Usually optimistic by 0.1-0.2mpg
