| The dreaded HDC Limp mode fault testing my patience! |

So I've read a lot about the Limp Mode/Not Limp Mode/Loss of Power issues relating to Discovery 3. Here's my dilemma.
I bought me first ever Discovery 18 months ago as was chuffed to bits ....... until the dreaded bong and power loss occurred! As with all the other postings, was happily driving along when the bong was heard and all manner of lights lit the dashboard up. Pull over turn ignition off and straight back on again and fault clears. I tried the main dealer who were absolutely hopeless. I even got the car to them when in fault mode and still drew a blank. So consulted a couple of indie dealers and had a discussion about the fault codes being generated.
The codes pointed to a problem with fuel pressure. The filter was changed but didn't fix the problem. The garage said the fuel pump would be the next thing to replace which they said would cost circa £1500! And here's where the dilemma is, if I go ahead with a new pump and it doesn't fix it then I still pay the £1500 and I still have the problem. Ok so you say that's the nature of repairs but the reason why I'm not rushing to have it done ( apart from the ready cash to do so ) is the irregular nature of the fault. For example, last weekend I drove from Bristol to Northampton no fault, then onto Newcastle no fault and then returning to Bristol I got within 30 miles and then "Bing". From October last year through to Feb this year the fault didn't occur once! During that period I noticed a break light bulb had gone and thought this was linked so didn't replace it. But come Feb Bing off it went again.
I would've thought that a part like a fuel pump that when it goes it goes. So you wouldn't get the long periods of no fault and you wouldn't be able to switch off and back on again to immediately clear the fault. This would indicate to me a sensor or electrical fault.
I would be really hacked off if it turns out to be a sensor / electrical fault after having the fuel pump changed.
Advice / thoughts please?

No, didn't replace the bulb. At first I thought this had significance that the fault had stopped occurring and the bulb had gone and was going to take it to the garage to replace the bulb and see if the fault happened again. However, before I could do this the fault happened again. So the fault was present with the bulb working and blown.

Mrs Clayton is trying to help as people like Robbo etc etc know far more than I ...
Its just what she suggests is a known remedy ..... 
You wouldn't think something so simple would solve all these weird issues but if you do a search on brake light etc., its linked to so many remedies to known faults/fixes ..:

You are suffering textbook alignment issues, unless the codes which you haven't divulged can reveal something else.

This sound very very similar to my issue.....
My list so far (some of which was done prior to my ownership)
Fuel Filter Changed, 3 times(!), no difference
LP Fuel Pump Changed - no difference
Brake Pedal Changed - no difference
Brake Light bulbs changed for genuine LR ones - no difference
Fuel Rail pressures checked - all within normal limits
Transmission case sensor changed - no difference
Longitudinal Accelerometer changed - no difference
Transmission Case Sensor replaced - no difference
EPB module changed (separate issue, but could have impacted) - no difference
Transfer Case Control Module Changed - no difference
BAS Remap applied - no difference (to issues!)
Auto Box Flush - no difference (to issues!)
Turbo Actuator checked - moves freely
Autobox Adaptation reset
Swapped out Clockspring & Steering Wheel Switches for known working ones - no change
MAP Sensor Cleaned - no change
Discovery 3/4 & RRS keys cut and programmed at your home or work
Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto retro fit - see it here
BAS Remaps/ EGR Blanking
Software updates/ enabling
Mobile Servicing & Repairs

Appreciate all comments so far. I don't have the fault codes but the garage did show me the screen and told me that the fault codes referred to fuel pressure issues. Therefore, diagnosis was fuel filter and then pump. Going to change the break light bulbs for LR ones to rule this out.
Why do LR not have a handle on this? Seems like it's left to individuals to fight through the myriad of options!

I keep getting the following Engine Management DTC's:
P0501 - Vehicle speed sensor A range/performance
P0087 - Fuel rail/system pressure – too low
Seem the Auto Box sensor has been replaced, and the Fuel Pressures according to the live data are well within normal
Discovery 3/4 & RRS keys cut and programmed at your home or work

Are you using a genuine fuel filter?
also check the connections on the filter LR service years back tried the fuel pump change with me but I requested a filter change first to a genuine part all issues were resolved.
My main syptom was some hesitation accelerating and occasionally hesitation at speed with 2 engine lights resolved by pulling over and cycling the key 2007 D3 HSE Artic Frost Silverish

That's interesting Wildrover, I have also noticed some hesitation when accelerating. Not all the time but sometimes when you put your foot down there's a definite pause before it kicks in. I haven't done any of the work so don't know if the filter was a genuine LR part. I can only assume it was as the garage is a LR specialist, albeit an indie. He explained that as I had bought it from a general car sales place that although they said it had been serviced he suspected it wasn't a proper LR schedule service as the fuel filter still looked like the factory fit one and it should've been changed last service.

I have exactly this fault with my disco 3, same symptoms everything. About to change the fuel pump as well!! Very alarmed that might not solve the problem. As far as I know all bulbs are genuine and I've had the switch replaced previously.... *now enjoying* D5 Namib Orange HSE 68

Surly LR can give a list of items that will make this problem happen ?? I've just drove 30 mile round trip and had it once  going up a big hill , I love my D3 but it does  off at times -------------------------------------------------
if you cant hold on dont let go , it ill come in handy for something even if you never use it.

Bulbs changed and no difference. After yet another long discussion with yet another LR mechanic it all points to a new fuel pump. Looks like `I'm gonna have to swallow it and get the pump changed. What really annoys me now is that the LR main dealer first had it in when still under extended warranty and couldn't find the fault or get it to recreate it. I now learn that it seems a very common fault so feel they should've had a pretty good idea what the cause was.

Bummer on the warranty issue, but reassuring that they should have the correct diagnosis with your comments of "I now learn that it seems a very common fault so feel they should've had a pretty good idea what the cause was. "
Which dealer was it? Maybe they can help me out

I had a run of exactly the same symptoms and I repeatedly had the fuel pressure codes pop up P087. In the end I did replace the brake switch and rear lights but during this time one of the headlight bulbs also failed and this was associated with a limp episode
In retrospect, in line with others' findings on brake bulbs, I think that the headlight bulbs can also trigger these symptoms. Having on some days gone into limp mode 20 times I haven't experienced a failure in weeks since I put new bulbs in. -------------------------------------------------------------------
