Well done discostick,
its great to see this can be done, even if a little awkward in some respects
one question
If you change the engine in this way (assuming it has died for some reason) once the replacement is fitted and everything connected up will it run using the original ECU and other replacement items such as injectors etc, or do the injectors need to be swapped over from the original unit Never get mad - get even !!

Everything should work ok. The only item I'm not sure on is the injectors, if they are coded in the ECU .? Hopefully someone will know on here..
I will be re using mine so not a concern.

My thoughts to, but it seems a little daft to put old injectors that may well have done 300k or even 400k miles of use into a new or refurbished low mileage engine Never get mad - get even !!

I'd agree, this engine had only one 70k, so I'm sure the injectors have plenty of miles left in them.
I will replace the glow plugs though, as they are notoriously risky of breaking when being changed.
Also getting the turbo re-con. Well worth it while it's out I think. Only about £165 at a reputable company.
I will most likely be fitting a new short block from LR and re-using the heads etc off this one. But will see what they are like when I pull them off. Damage was to the bottom end by the look of it.

Injectors are not coded.

I see your thread seeking a new engine is still active, and you are talking about a LR short engine, so I assume you couldn't find a decent D3 engine.
At some time it would be interesting to hear what's wrong with you engine.
Good luck

It actually worked out the same price to buy a new short block ~ 3k. So hoping the heads are all ok, I will have the upgraded block with the 3.0 ltr crank in it, Comes with a new oil pump etc. 12 mth warranty too.
Thanks for all the replys and interest, I couldn't of got this far without the forum support.

Yes, well done discostick
We all admire your courage and determination
Now doubt I will have to do mine when the LR 'select warranty' expires in June 2013
Something is bound to go seriously wrong after that
The photos are great and explain much more than you can ever say

Hats off to you - I only had to change a cam belt on a pinto engine years ago - took nearly all day lying on my parents drive on a freezing November day - dont envy you doing all that work outside in this weather
Good Luck

Because I didn't take the gearbox out and it wouldn't come out with it still attached! Also I bought a workshop manual off eBay and it said to remove it!
