Whirrs but won't start - Error "Flame detected prior..."

I bought my 2007 2.7 TDV6 in the summer and since the colder weather I noticed the FBH isn't working.

I have an iCarsoft so read the codes and got the "Flame detected prior to normal operation".
I've been researching on here and online to try things to get it started but still no joy.

The fuel line to the FBH was dry to I have syringed in some diesel and now it is full. I even syringed some into the FBH through the fuel in nozzle.
I have rapidly tapped the blue/white wire to see if the pump works and it is pumping fuel up.

Tonight I tried it all again and the FBH whirrs into life then after about a minute the whirr increases for about 10 seconds then it slows down to less of a whirr than it was at the beginning. Then I get the error again.

The iCarsoft live data shows the water pump on.
It shows the combustion fan on.
But the fuel preheater and fuel pump stays off.

The glow plug comes on, goes up to about1.18% then goes off.

What do you think it could be?
Do you think it could just. need a clean?

Any input and experience welcome, as really want to get this working.

thanks

Jim

Welcome!

Glowplug gets a higher resistance in time, so does not get hot enough…
If that happens, the fuel dosingpump, does not get a starting signal at all. That is why the fuel line has emptied in time…presumably…

Of the resistance is too high, cleaning does not help, only a new one does…

Toptip:

You can do some research yourself
Use the wiki

https://www.disco3.co.uk/wiki/Home

If you do that, you will find the subject FBH maybe, just maybe there is a workshop manual Wink
And maybe, just maybe you will find this content.:

6.3.1.4 Electrical test of glowplug......................................... 603

Thumbs Up

Ps
The search button is also a very nice feature

I have that and read it. Don't think my multimeter does the 4-conductor measuring.

Looks like it is going to be a strip down and clean, from what I have seen elsewhere.

Was hoping it was going to be something I could fix insitu.
Confused

"everybody"does that... Laughing

a clean, CAN be a solution, but in my experience it seldom is THE solution..
atleast NOT in case of a raised resistance of the glowplug...

cleaning ONLY helps if it has done a few too much short runs (less than 10 minutes)

CAN be worth a try, but if not expect to spend a few quid for a new one.

they can be bought seperatly and rather cheap in Germany normally..

https://www.ebay.de/ & https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/

the germans have a "better" ebay version than "we" kleinanzeigen is without fee's involved

Thanks for your replies Motolab.

Looks like I either try the clean and check the glow plug. Or pay out for a multimeter that can do the 4-conductor measuring. Will a normal glow plug test work (testing with wire or normal multimeter)?

So I just stripped it down, gave it a clean and it still isn't working. Sad

Do you think it could be the glow plug that needs replacing?

I did read what you put lol

But I could do a clean easily, as ordering a part that might not be needed would be a waste.

I wasn't sure if your reference to spending a few quid on a new was for a complete FBH unit. Hence my question about can you buy just a glow plug. Ive done a google search and can only find glow plugs for other Webasto models. Not the Thermo V. So I'm still looking.

I think, this one will fit

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WEBASTO-1315949...634-2357-0

Though from a slightly later model, and i did not test it yet..

It is “high” season now for FBH parts, so they are scarce and there fore more expensive now..
