Weird looking counterweights

My mate with an RRS asked me if I have metal block 'counterweights' under the rear of my D3. I wasn't sure but I had a look and sure enough I do. They look like they're rubber mounted and seem to be a balance weight of some sort. they are right alongside the tailpipe outlet on each side.

It looks like the designers at LR decided to have a laugh - but surely there is some logical technical reason for these things.

Anyone have any ideas?
Regards

Pete...

It's because Land Rovers have the balls to "go beyond" Smile

Seriously though, they're referred to as "Harmonic Dampers", something to do with making the ride smoother, plenty of info around if you search for - "+harmonic +dampers"
