VA's Crossing is closed
There have been a few thread resurrections of late which made me nostalgic.
I don't know how long VA's crossing has closed, but the sign doesn't look very new. I only live 5 mins away and never used it outside of forum outings so not too devastating!
Heres me ploughing through in my original SE. It went through calmly with road tyres, my Duratracs would walk that now though

Is not showing on the Wiltshire Rights of way map or list of closures / TROs
The byway is CHIT1 in their naming scheme.(Remap, EGRs Blanked,Silicon I/C hose) from BAS, (Torque Convertor, Compressor, FL Wishbones, Alternator) by WD, Belts by Newbury4x4, Megaflush+extra cooler by GRGB, Diff+Transfer oils, ARB Bushes, Fuel filter, Fixed Towbar, Remote FBH.

That does not look like an official sign, its too permanent. Most TRO notices are on a laminated A4 sheet, with an excerpt from the OS map showing the closed section. If its a permanent closure, there should be a proper sign like in the Highway code. Maybe the military closed it for exercises?
There is a route out to the right of that pic that is strictly for military vehicles. Or a certain Tonga Green D3. I think that's the route that is closed?
There is an emergency closure on Shrewton 13 due to damage to the track. That came in last week and runs until April.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

In my last post in the Army I had to deal with explosives on a daily basis. I planed and executed hundreds of battle simulations for exercises all over the Plain. There were certain restrictions that I had to abide by. Closeness to troops not wearing the correct PPE, distance from buildings etc. 1 of the main criteria was distance from public rights of way. There is no option for the Army to close the byway without a TRO or court order. We couldn't just close it for a day or week to suit our training.
I've even seen armoured attacks on CHD being halted because of civets walking along the byways in that area.
We could ask them nicely to stop and wait and if they did they would be given a close up of how we operated and a good demonstration of tanks and guns etc. but we couldn't stop them. Even if we blocked the road with our vehicle, if they walked round us or drove round us we had to stop until they were clear.
This doesn't look like an official sign, normally there would be the council details at the bottom and contact phone number. Or as was explained TRO's are normally laminated A4 sheets.

Don't forget there are a lot of restricted byways orutthere and this may be an old sign as mentioned above.
There's a massive project underway to update all the waymarkers on SPTA. I was out with Landmarc, Wilts CC and GLASS last month on a volunteer day and 35 new signs were put up. Over 200 have gone up in the last 6 months and there is a lot more planned. I'll check this one with the ROW guys and get back to you.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. I think I last went through it in October 2013. It was pretty dry then.
TBH, I'd not be surprised if it was closed permanently as it had been used as a bit of a "play" area for years. Something I'm afraid myself and many other forum members are guilty of It was hard to just go through it just once!
Although, I should add that the due to the layout of the land of VA's crossing with the trees, the damage was always confined to the specific area and couldn't spread. Something that I noticed had happened to a few of the heavily rutted tracks on the Plain.
