Anyone tried or considered Dunlop Grandtrek ST 8000? They're available in the right sizes by the looks of it

I am sure I paid a lot less than that, but you will have to wait until I get back to my officed to check for you, the receipt is in my drawer. I seem to recall that I paid £155 each for Synchrones, but I may be wrong.

They are as soft as butter and wear out quicker than you can save for a new set. Very sticky and grippy whilst they last.

No not neccessarily because they are very good road grippers. It is the wear that is very quick as the compound is soft, hence the grip. They are not too popular in Milton Keynes, the Home of the Roundabout.

For an all-terrain tyre on 17" alloys, is the Cooper ST still the only choice or are there other makes appearing?
Thanks, BP

Just got back to my office, and I paid £164 per tyre including VAT balance and valve, for 255 x 19 Michelin Synchrones. This was last November, so can't have gone up that much.

I've started looking for alternatives for the Coopers. I'll let you know what I find

Stock tyre for 17" rim is 235/70, the Coopers are 245/70 so a little oversize but they fit fine. 255/65 should be a good fit, apart from the width it's on a few mm bigger than the 235/70. Assuming it'll go on the 17" rim okay there won't be any issues with fouling as the stock 18" & 19" tyres are 255, freeflytim and a few others have managed to fit 285/60 R18 Nitto Terra Grapplers on so there is obviously room to go oversize if you want to.

Grabber AT2s and Wrangler MT/Rs are available in 265/70 R17 which look like good alternatives if they'll fit the rim and the load/speed ratings are high enough (Grabbers are, I need to check on the Wranglers). Ideally need to find a friendly tyre fitter that will fit one and let you test at access height on full lock for any rubbing

BN did you venture off-road with the ST 8000's ? They sound like a good all-rounder to me as I'm prepared to sacrifice wear rate for good on-road handling.
When I get my D3, I'd estimate it spending approx. 90% of the time on tarmac the other 10% being farm tracks & fields & I'd love to do some mild "laning" etc. I'm well aware of the perils of wet grass & the sales blurp for the ST 8000 does actually mention this.
With the 19" HSE wheels, there isn't a huge choice of tyres. From what I've read the Wrangler HP is better than you would expect in off-road conditions.
The Wrangler MT/R sounds great off-road, but surely too extreme for 90% road use?
I'd love to hear the opinions of others who use their D3's as I intend doing & what 19" tyres they recommend.

Where in Hampshire are you? Try Micheldever Tyres not far from winchester. Always seem to have good prices.

I paid £135 all in last year for a 255/55x19 Wranlger from Cox's in Oldbury (Nr Brum)

United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Bonatti GreyDiscovery 3

Hi Alan,

I am near Basingstoke... Micheldever Tyres quoted £146 (all in) on the Pirelli Zero's. They could not quote on the Michelin's Syncrone's though.

I have decided to go with the Michelins, through my LR dealer, despite the extra cost. They have stock, can fit them when I want and they will collect/deliver to my office.

I also have a few 'non tyre' related issues that need sorting under warranty, so the 'one stop shop' works for me.

Cheers
Martin

United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Zambezi SilverDiscovery 3

I have just used "Micheldever Tyres" at 26,000 miles.
I changed all 4, although only the front really needed doing, there were several thousand left in the rears.
I bought Wranglers, V rated 18", OE spec for mine.
£525, H rated would have been £40 cheaper.
Had weights put on the outside, rather than stuck on the inside, and they are almost perfect, a slight wobble at 60mph but only if you are looking for it.

I have found the Wranglers good although a little noisy as they wear. I hated them on the Freelander but have been very impressed with them on the D3. Farm tracks and fields have been exactly where I have used them plus a little green laning and Tixover on BNs day. I had toyed with getting wheels for off road as hidden flints damaged my alloys Crying or Very sad But I know I would end up not changing them about as it would be too much of a faff. The Wranglers are an excellent all rounder (bit like the car really!)
