Tyres conundrum
Morning all, HEEEEEELLLLLPPPP.
having been caught out his week in the snow with my “all season” road tyres and knowing that going forward I’m going to be more in need for some more serious off road capability I’m now looking at swapping out all four corners to all terrain tyres.
Needs is for a decent road capability, dry & wet, but the best ability I can get for mud and snow.
I’ll be doing Green landing but also vehicle recovery from muddy fields, snow banks etc
From historic reading, the General grabber AT3’s were an automatic go to, however looking around, including posts on here, the Faulkon wild peaks AT, GEOLANDER AT’s and Pirelli all seem to be well rated and in contention anyone able to give some ideas?
Tbh, the GG AT3’s are still at the top of my list due to the tread pattern “flowing” into the side walls, I can see that they should be able to provide a bit more grip and protection to the side wall however, the Pirelli deffinately appear to have the more aggressive tread pattern

I have used GG AT2’s on my D2 during the winter, then used AT3’s on my D3 and on my D5.
So far, have been very impressed with all of them.

I have gg3 at on my L322 and I can't fault them.....except the price they seem to have gone up so much it that I will not be buying again.
I will be replacing all the tyres on our new project D3 at some point and will be looking at these..

The Pirelli AT+ is subject to Pirelli's famous habit of suddenly delisting them from the UK (just as they did with the ATR in certain sizes). They're a good tyre but you can't rely on being able to replace them so I'd give them a miss.
So far it's been good on road but haven't had a chance to test it off road in any meaningful way. It is the AT tyre fitted to the new Defender, however, so possibly that's a good sign.
Note that the 255/55/19 size (and a few others) don't get the Kevlar nor the 3MPSF rating (although they appear to be the same as the tyres that do get the winter rating, so performance is likely to be the same).Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I've no idea about GG, Pirelli etc but went from Goodyear Duratrac to Yokohama Geolander SO15 almost eaxctly 1 year ago. So far v impressed esp in snow. Pretty good on ice too.
Obvs can't match Duratrac in fresh snow or mud. Almost went for GG but price of Geolander so good I coudn't resist !

I’ve driven two winters now with the Pirelli Scorpion AT+ up here in Finland and haven’t gotten stuck or had any issues. Not sure what else I can say.
If I had to choose again I’d take the Pirellis. Although if they would be unavailable I’d buy the Falkens.

I’ve got a set of 255/55/20 AT3’s and I’ve no complaints and they are remarkably quiet given their tread pattern.
Were they available in that size I’d have gone for the Pirelli AT+ as first choice.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

How do AT and standard tyres compare on road noise? I’m running Goodyear Wranglers in the warm weather but due to sporadic off-road excursions I’m considering Duratrac - but I’m concerned about a significant change in cabin noise.

The diff whine on the D3 is higher and more distinct, I don’t worry about this

Thanks all, you’ve added clarity, confusion and wider choose all in one thread
Was aiming towards the Grabber AT3’s partly from the comments here but also general good reviews etc but just found the Avon AX7’s, anyone had them on? Avon seem to be have recieving good feedback on their road tyres in recent years and looking at the comparison reviews they appear better all round than the GG AT3’s, and their EU label shows them as C/C rather than the E/E of the grabbers? Only difference I can see is that the Avon’s are “only” M+S, whereas the GG have the 3PMSF certification.

I did some research on these recently. Avon is part of the Cooper Tire group which in turn is owned by Goodyear.
The Avon factory in UK is scheduled for closure at end of 2023 if that matters to you.

Yet to use them in anger but I went for Michelin Latitude Cross on mine in standard size. I used to run Kumho MT51's on my D1 and D2 which behaved ok on those cars but were noisy. Didn't fancy that on the D3 as it's a much nicer car to drive and didn't want to spoil that. The Michelin's are between an AT and a road tyre.
Only experience of GG AT3's is I've witnessed them get cut up on more aggressive lanes including one sidewall failure. Depends on how serious you are getting but from my experience if you go more extreme it'll make the car worse for day to day use, worse mpg etc.
I would buy the MT51's again if I were in the market for something more aggressive. They sit between an AT and MT tyre, I found them to be durable, performed well off road and on the D1 and D2 at least weren't too bad on road. Much slower and worse handling cars though so wouldn't like to say how they'd be on a heavier faster D3/4.
Maybe two sets of wheels is an option?
