Hi all,
I am planning a summer trip through Scotland for the summer vacation. Will be travelling with the D3 with rooftent. Am looking for ideas and suggestions on where to go, or routes to follow. Of course small roads, green lanes and nice views are very welcome. Am thinking to travel up from the border along the East side of Scotland, drive on to the Northern Highlands and go back via the West coast. I have three weeks available to play around.
Suggestions welcome!

just let yourself go ..... any site or direction you take in Scotland will always be a hit with beautiful things and unforgettable landscapes, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited in my life..
...I could tell several sites, but rather better than what the locals say more properly and meaning, only one thing, must think paths in the highlands become too slow, and do not be too ambitious considering too long stage....
....I hope you enjoy your trip like I did on a couple of occasions lost in translation!

I'd give the East side a miss, West is best
There are no 'Green Lanes' in Scotland. All land is owned by someone and most good tracks are fenced off and gated nowadays so it's difficult to find anything like that although a lot of our roads do resemble tracks to our Southern friends
Ardnamurchin and Skye should not be missed Stew,
2010 D4 gone but I really loved it

Harald,
If your planning of going up the East coast once over the Forth bridge your in Fife,
You can collect those wheels if you want
But once over the bridge follow the signs for fife coastal route, it'll take you all the way to the Tay bridge over to Dundee.
You will pass through lots of nice fishing villages on the way to St Andrews

Loads of great input. Have been reading some of the links as well. Very useful!
As the trip is planned for July, and I will also take SWMBO and kid I guess fitting a set of wheels in the back during one of the first days of the vacation will not be the best idea...

Although... I'll look into the ferry cost of bringing the small trailer so I can buy loads of cheap stuff from you Scots. Then the vacation will be almost like a Christmas trip. Packages everywhere. Disco3 TDV6 2005
