Warranty

Hi
Need some advice. I have just been offered a warranty from warranty direct called securecare lite. The way I understand it is, if you break down and have to call your breakdown company ie AA, RAC, Greenflag etc and you have to be taken to a garage, warranty direct will pay for all your repairs. They say this includes almost everything including wear parts. They will pay upto £200 in labour charges and because of the age of my vehicle (2005)and its mileage (112000) 50 per cent of the cost of parts. Up to the market value of my disco. The cost of this is £135 for a year, £256 for 2 years and £371 for three.
I can see the obvious, like your not going to call out the AA if your heater isnt working one morning but for major breakdowns like belts breaking or turbo blowing its sounds fairly reasonable.
Anyone have any thoughts

thats not many hours labour is it, about 11/2 from a dealer or perhaps 4 at an indy. When I had my D3 I had the AA breakdown insurance, wasn't far from that price to cover 2 cars and get full AA recovery cover. Downside is that it only pays out £500 with a £35 excess, it takes the sting out of most things although obviously if you are unlucky then you may still have a big bill, you don't mention the excess on this policy.

What is the market value of your car? £6K ish, so half of that, the difference isn't that big is it?

I was once stung by a warranty not paying out, so really don't like paying out much for something that may well not pay out when most needed.

on the face of it, it doesn't look too bad, however, remember a warranty company plans to make money. Look very very carefully at the small print and think how the No department, sorry claims dept, will get out of it.

On the face of it, that is an amazing warranty Shocked
Despite getting parts at cost price, and no labour to worry about, I would be tempted to have a look at that myself

Especially on an 07/08MY

Well mikey
I've signed up to and had all the paper work come. So if you want to know anything let me know. I think the newer and less mileage a vehicle has, the less you pay towards parts. Mine is the max you have to pay

Sounds interest, so... on the list you have there if it fails to the point of AA being called to recover they will pay the FULL labour costs at a rate of up to £200/h plus will pay for 50% of the replacement parts cost leaving you with only 50% parts plus the £60 excess to pay.

What's the catch? Servicing at franchised dealers only? All advisory points attended to on service sheet? (e.g, clutch nearly worn)

Got to be something there or they're just hoping you'll not claim as you'd be fixing it all prior to being so bad you call the recovery truck and have that inconvenience....

The first catch is the excess which applies to each and every item claimed for, so 2 x lower wishbones = 2 x excesses, for example. On my last claim I lost £200 on excesses, before deducting the 50% parts, so in total I got a bit less than half back.

The second catch is that, as with all insurance, they will do their best to convince you that your claim is not covered for whatever reason they can find.

It helps here to have an indy who will not be easily fobbed off with questions like "would it fail an MOT?". Read the following thread for an example of dubious reasoning and a determined attitude to avoiding liability.

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic66980.html

That said others on here swear by WD and I have had successful claims myself, so, as long as you can play the game well yourself its worth having as peace of mind in case those really expensive failures like gearbox or turbo do hit you.

What the never offer you is that for £50 a year you can buy out the betterment clause. This is never offered, you have to ask for it. That way you only have the £50 excess to pay and saved me somewhere in the region of £1k on my claims before I sold my D3

I asked about no betterment but they were adamant they wouldn't offer it on a vehicle of my age / mileage. Like so many things with WD what they offer one person is not the same as the next. I'm sure their sales people are targeted on stuff like that, so one might be willing to drop a bit for a sale whereas another won't.
