The only reason you need an Alko towball (and this only applies to the bolt on type) is that it sticks slightly further out, and therfore provides clearance for the hitch head stabilser when turning, as without it, the stabilser can foul on the towball bolts. This doesnt apply to a swan-neck type as there's plenty of clearance around those.

Isn't the neck of the Alko ball slimmer than some standard balls, it has been known for Alko Hitches to come off the ball on Ferry Ramps and such as the articulation can cause the hitch to lever off if using a none Alko Ball.
