Butane provides more energy than propane for the same mass. As a result, different pressures were used, 28 millibars for butane and 37 for propane. This meant that a gas appliance would operate satisfactorily on either gas, giving approximately the same heat ouput without changing its jets.

With the change to bulkhead mounted regulators a compromise pressure of 30 millibars is normally used. This means that you only need to change the pigtail that connects the gas bottle to the regulator and your gas appliances should work with either butane or propane. The heat output will be a little lower on propane but should still be quite satisfactory.

I use BP Gaslite 10Kg bottles, they don't need a gauge because the cylinder is transparent, they use Propane so don't freeze and I pay about the same as my Father does for his 6Kg calorgas lightweight bottles. They are safer as in a fire they melt rather than go off like missiles but the downside is they are bigger bottles so some vans don't have a big enough locker.

Propane every time. I have 2 x Calor lightweight red ones in my van connected to the standard bulkhead mounted regulator and all fine.
