My brother has got a job in Ballarat, near Melbourne, and is due to move out in January. He is contemplating shipping his car out (BMW 120d) but just wanted some advise really.
Does anybody know the rough cost if you have previously done it?
Anything to be aware of?
Is it worth doing or should he sell his car in the UK before he goes, then got something over there?
Any advise would be much appreciated

He has had a look into the import duty but seems to think it'll still be cheaper doing it that way than buying an equivalent car when he gets there

Looks like sell and buy one over here would be my choice!
What a hassle.
Just looked on Aussie Car Sales and a 4 year old one is A$25000 to A$30000.

My wife and I shipped both our Defender 90's over here for about 3000 GBP including insurance. They were shpped by the people who shipped the rest of our belongings.
I had to pay $150AUD to get them delivered to my address. It then cost me $2200 to get the NIDRI plates and engineered. However, I was ripped off on these charges and know how to do it much cheaper now. We then had to pay 3% stamp duty when we registered them in Queensland. My wife's 90 was values at $4500 AUD and my at $2500 AUD.

Morning all,
Just thought I'd chime in with the quote I have gotten for shipping a 05 D3 HSE to Perth;
Quote:
-- shipping costs --
$2,039 ocean freight & export customs
$1,200-$1,600 customs, quarantine & port fees
$275 Australian Customs vehicle valuation
$884 import duty
$1,994 GST
-- road registration costs --
$880 ADR compliance
$150 roadworthy requirements
$997 registration (12 months)
$0 stamp duty (exempt in WA)
-- other costs --
$50 import approval application
$990 Iron Lady Imports fee ('A' Package)
All costs are listed in AUD$ and any costs converted from other currencies have been calculated at the current exchange rate. We are assuming that you do not already have your Australian import approval and will be using our 'A' Package service for assistance from start to finish.
The shipping rate has been calculated based on RORO (roll-on/roll-off) shipping from Southampton port. We can also arrange sole use container shipping and/or shipping from other ports if required although costs will vary. This does not include transport to the port however we can request a quote to have the vehicle collected if you are not able to deliver to the port yourself.

You need to carefully consider the insurance process for your vehicle.
I imported a car from the UK and insured the vehicle for what I paid for it in England. The vehicle was worth a lot more in Australia.
There was damage to the vehicle during shipping and a claim made to my insurance company (Lloyds) - they only paid 60% of the claim as they considered that as I had insured it for its UK price, the price I paid for the car I had under insured the vehicle. I questioned them that if the ship had sunk on the way out and I had insured the vehicle for the Aust price they would have paid that - answer was no as they would only reimburse my purchase cost.
If my insurance company had been Australian I would have recourse through the Australian consumer affairs system but being in Australia it was not worth chasing up Lloyds through the UK system.
So my advice is to insure the vehicle what it is worth in Australia and if possible use an Australian insurance company.

Garry, Many people dont know that this applies to their house too! If the Insurance company think you have under insured they consider that you are taking some of the risk so may not pay out full amount of insured value. Need to read the fine print. Happy to take the premium though! Take the road less traveled. Which is why we are going to be paying to ship ours out.
Just looking at getting a few choice parts fitted before we head out in April.
I spotted one D3 HSE, similar year but with more miles on a forecourt for $37k, while I was out in Bunbury doing a reccy this June.
Can't actually wait to get out there.
Now just working out if it is more cost effective to ship house contents with the car in a single large container.
