Stuck in Zambia with a P0087 |

Since 5 days, the Disco 3 is going into limp-mode with P0087.
The issue started once a day but soon came up every 5 kilometers. We figured out, that by driving the car below 2000rpm and the A/C off, the issue will not appear and managed to cover the 400km to Lusaka like this.
Since the LPFP has a current draw of 3.1A (ignition off, measured at relay pin’s) and the flow rate through the Schrader valve is at approx. 0.5liter per minute, we decided to buy a new LPFP at the local Land Rover dealer.
I replaced the pump today, but unfortunately, the current draw and flow rate are the same with the new pump. Did not manage to make a test-run today, since it was getting dark by the time I had everything back together.
But I doubt, that the P0087 will disappear.
Some facts on the car:
- 2006 Disco 3, 2.7, 7A… VIN
- 197’000km
- The car is used only once or twice a year for holiday
- Fuel filter (MAN) was replaced 2 days ago, before traveling the last stretch to Lusaka
- Replaced HPFP 6 month ago at 190’000km, due to a P2290 with an original LR part
- Although this is Africa: I doubt, that fuel quality is the issue, since we filled up only at bigger, well frequented petrolstations in town’s – no obvious dirt in the tank. And the first issue appeared only 500km after the last re-fill.
I appreciate anyone’s advice on what to do next.

Replace fuel filter and check again,
flow rate in static condition is not a clue on it's own, values could be much higher when full power is requested from HPFP - Easy-Lift suspension module 4.0

Had the same problem and spent thousands replacing Hpfp and LPFP together with fuel filters etc..
Mine was cured by the replacement of the fuel rail pressure sensor which was throwing up false readings and throwing the car into limp home mode.. ideally use the genuine part which comes as part of the fuel rail.. I have known numerous members on here that bought a pattern part which continued that same fault..

Did a 70km testdrive today without any issue,Pushing the car hard was not realy possible, since it's all flat and going at higher speeds not realy possible with the many people along the road.
Lowered the tank again and measured the voltage at the connector - was 13V as on the battery. Removed the cover at the right front wheel arch - there was no connector and the 3 points to ground to the chassis looked good.
I guess I can ruel out an electrical problem at the lpfp, but still don't understand, why the old and new pump only take 3.1A
We will head out of Lusaka tomorrow and see, if the issue is gone for good.
@ Sidestick: I have only one filter left, which I like to keep as spare for the trip, but will definetly change on the last day of the trip to compare the flow.
@ Farmer Chak: I' ll take that as a spare for the next trip - prices here in Zambia are almost tripple from Europe.
Any additional ideas what I could check and diagnose are very welcome.

Made it 100km out of town, before the first error came up therefore turned around.
I'll drop the tank again tomorrow and try to blow all the pipes and check the flow-rate at different points on the lp network.
Does anyone know, if the flowrate before and after dieselfilter should be also at around 2lpm?

Checked the pressure at the Schrader valve with an inaccurate tyrepressure gage. The pressure increased with the new pump to 0.3bar. Disconnecting the Schrader valve pipe and putting a hose on the metallic tube, the flow is slightly above 2lpm. So my conclusion is, that the lp-system is fine and have to focus on the hp-system. The fuel rail pressure sensor is the next part I plan to replace, unfortunately not available in Zambia. So will have to bring this pat in for our next trip.
Apart from the sensor, people reporte in this forum, that the hpfp or the injectors could resolve this issue on the hp-side. Is there any other component I missed?

Save your money because Hpfp are expensive.. replaced all of the stuff you’ve talked about to no avail…at significant cost … then replaced the fuel rail incorporating the pressure sensor and problem solved…
You can buy non genuine sensor on its own but lots of people still have the problem afterwards and so I was recommended to replace with genuine part.. did that and hey presto no more issues!
Back in love with my car again.. the pressure sensor fails and because the car thinks it is not getting the fuel it requires shuts the engine down to save it from running lean…
Have you noticed a slight increase in your mpg readings since the problem began? Mine for the last couple of weeks prior to failure showed a 3-4 mpg increase over the almost standard 23.9 I have had for the last ten years…
