I think its fair to go with the widely accepted view that the ZF is bomb proof
the manual less so, especially clutch (made of rice paper)Illegitimi Non Carborundum

I grudge paying any road fund licence so it was the cheaper tax bracket for me, I personally would not buy an 07 on the grounds that a friend did and ended up going half with Land Rover for an new engine, only after 16 months ownership.
Why take the risk just go a year up or down, there's enough other things that will pack in to keep you busy without the risk of the engine calving on you.

I have a manual and sometimes think auto would be nice, but on my trip around west coast of Scotland of over 1500 miles she averaged 34mpg would not have got that out of an auto

I got 28 mpg with a roof box and the back of the car full to the brim with camping stuff ! For me if you get a sports car then get a manual. Every day driving then get an auto.James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Given a choice i would by something else. In my present state of mind (frustration) with the lack of quality /relabilty of LR D3's a Citroen CV6 would be a better option.!!!!!!

If you're "bad" at manual transmissions you can sink the MPG there too
I think the divide between manual and automatic as far as fuel economy is concerned has closed quite a bit since we went from four speed boxes to the newer six speed (and I guess the eight) transmission. Certainly if heavy traffic is part of your daily routine, the automatic makes life easier.....

Auto every time it's just so smooth. I have a 07 and its been brilliant. Just done 2000 miles towing in France and it towed brilliantly. Why mess about changing gear just let the car do. Just had the 105 service and had the oil pump changed as well which I think was the only real issue compared to other years.
