Ideal wheel size for the disco 3 and preferred tyre brand? |
|
Come on then, inspire me! Currently the disco is rolling on 19" wheels with road tyres. The one thing i have learned over the years is that you do not go out in a muddy park or out in the winter with your slippers on! I use the disco off road all year - shooting, fishing and working. But it also drops off the kids at school and takes us all camping. My previous d2 loved 16" wheels and bf goodrich at's. give me some ideas on what works best on the d3? Cheeeers.

It's all a matter of opinion.
Ask Andy from sponsors AJS:-
http://www.ajstyres.co.uk/
My vote would be for 17" wheels with GG ATs excellent ride, excellent off-road, last maybe 50k+ miles - and not expensive.

why not just stick GG ATs on the 19" rims you have? They seem to get good reviews from most folks.

for muddy fields etc - personally, I would ditch the 19s and get some Copper STs on 17 inch rims.
had these on the D3 for 6 years and they were great as an on and off road tyre.
currently got the General Grabbers ATs in 19inch on the D4 and in comparison to the Coopers, they are crap.. Duncan

For what it's worth I'd certainly go for more tyre and less wheel if your going to be even occasionally off road. I run standard 17" wheels on my D3 with Cooper Discoverer ATRs (235/70 R17) which I have found to be an excellent tyre. They have performed well on road as well as 'off road' in muddy fields (with tin tent etc.) and in some serious snow in the Alps a few times now. I'm on my second set and they are giving me a good 45K-50K of mainly road use per set.
IMHO I like the more functional look of the D3 with more tyre on the rims...less bling

I used to be a fan of branded tyres but having both Michlien and Hankook tyres with cracking sidewalls after less than 2 years old i will never waste money on expensive tyres if there perished before i can even ware the tread out!
Mine has accelera and they have excellent ratings for both wet grip and drag efficiency, i would buy them again. Check mytyre.co.uk all the tyre have efficiency ratings so you know what to expect
Jus tread you post again, bfg all terrain are very good i would stick with them. Mine are for mainly road use.

the ride isn't as good maybe as bigger tyres & smaller wheels
The 19" ones on mine as delivered aren't bling....the 19" is there for a purpose....the car makers put them on as a standard piece of kit.
Tricked up very large wheels with skinny tyres is BLING
as is the vanity move of painting wheels daft colours (Khanisation) or de badging cars (boy racer ish).....EGO,EGO, more EGO
I'm not bothered what they LOOK like...my total concern is safety on handling & braking....then maybe length of life...then cost...always in that order........I have a hard working vehicle that has to be safe, functional & cost effective. BREXIT - done properly.

Cheers folks for all the advice.
Think its going to come down to tyre availability. 17" possibly too small, think if i can get 18" with bf goodrich/cooper/general with an all terrain pattern. Just dont think its worth getting two sets running one for winter because i am off road throughout the summer, rain = wet parks!
