The dangerous moment is when there's no other cars about to give you visual clues.

Years ago I pulled out of a campsite in Germany, and drove for about a mile before meeting a car coming the other way round a gentle curve...

" Censored He's on the wrong side of the road!"

" Censored No, it's ME!" ... swerve...

It scared me for a moment, but it was worse for him... there were 5 other Land Rovers in convoy behind me Rolling with laughter

Funny now, but not at the time. Never happened to me again, not even for a moment!

another tip.......articulated lorries and any lorry..just be careful on motorways, they have speed limiters which allows them to do a maximum speed of 56 mph but a lot will travel at 50mph to save fuel.

slip road coming on to the motorways mean that you have to give way to those already on the motorway ie "priority from the right". If you are on the motorway in lane one then you do not have to give way but if the next lane is clear it would be good road manners to move over in to lane 2, then back in to lane 1 when the lane is clear.

REMEMBER TO MATCH THE SPEED OF THE TRAFFIC ALREADY ON THE MOTORWAY WHEN COMING DOWN THE SLIP ROAD, DO NOT JUST SLOWLY COME DOWN AS YOU'LL HAVE A VERY UPSET MOTORIST BEHIND YOU Shocked

New laws come in to force this month which means you cannot stay in lane 2 if lane 1 is clear.

As for roundabouts when coming off the motorways, picture it as a clock face, if you are going off at 3 o'clock then you go to the right hand side lane approaching the roundabout indicating right and when you get to 12 o'clock you move over to the left hand side but indicating your intensions. DO NOT GO AROUND THE ROUNDABOUT ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE IF YOU ARE GOING RIGHT AND ALWAYS CHECK YOUR LEFT HAND BLIND SPOT.

Another new law coming in to force this month IS THAT YOU HAVE TO USE YOUR INDICATORS ON ROUNDABOUTS, ie indicate your intension to go left or right when approaching and exiting a roundabout.

Thumbs Up

a couple of links to help yer

HOW NOT TO ENTER THE MOTORWAY!!

BTW good luck for London my friend, Whistle

Silly question, but where do I find out about these new laws and exactly when they come into introduction etc.? I've done a load of searches and can only find the press reports of what was being planned from last month.

Strikes me, these individual traffic laws are now getting so complicated we need one .gov site that allows us to research them. The Highway Code doesn't really cut it any more!

I ask because we've still got police driving instructors telling people to only bother indicating if your signal will benefit other road users!

They will have to do a whole lot of work to make these "new" laws enforcable.

First of all, the left hand (number 1) lane will require resurfacing for many thousands of miles to get rid of the grooves before anyting under 5 tonnes will be safe using it.

Secondly, about half the roundabouts in the country will need reconfigured so that there is a clear left, straight, right possibility. Any most of the others will need the arrows on the road to be changed to match reality.

Also, do these laws require drivers to go in the direction that they indicate - now that would be a real improvement!

A simple tip i have found having a right hand drive car in Spain is always try and park facing the same way as the traffic is going.

The only time i have driven on the wrong side over the road here is when jump in the car and move off when parked facing the flow of traffic.

Enjoy Lonon, i used to live in Chiswick nice place Thumbs Up

this is one that has puzzled me when I read threads on advance driving and even watching youtube where police advance drivers giving same advise.
I read somewhere that in the advance driving test that over use of the indicators is a fail point Shocked

I understand that if there are no other road users that you are indicating to no one; but to me that means I have to think about whether its needed or not; while at the moment I indicate every time out of instinct/training and is less to think about giving me more time to observe/ risk assessment.

so anybody who teaches or tests drivers for advance pass, can you give us the reasons for this; I would appreciate it greatly Thumbs Up

been there, got the T-shirt, only I was in USA and friends we had made were in the back seat thinking what on earth I was doing; after I expressed surprise and moved to correct side, did they say; they thought I was joking.

its surprising how it can catch us out, I usually find this happens approx 2 weeks after returning from vacation where the other side is driven Embarassed
