i seriously doubt you will get 8km range at that price
probably fine for laning as long as you are close together. Its not the height of the fall but the sudden stop at the bottom that hurts!!

The box says 'Up to 8km'. I have some cheapish Motorolas which are supposed to work up to 5km. They are absolutely fine for laning and site events.
I guess even the professional PMRs performance will be limited by terrain features such as trees, buildings and hills.
I'm sure the LIDL ones will be fine for someone who wants a cheap set for occasional useClubs Mantec, Tasmods, LEDS, AT2s on 18s, Maxxis Bighorns on 17s, Remote FBH, BAS. ReMap, BSS., RLD Personalised SWP., Safari Snorkel, Faultmate, Three Musketeers & MUD

But they hardly come under the title of cheap and cheerful do they I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

I'm tempted by these, but wondering how much difference there really is between cheap sets like this and a quality set like the Entels that there was a group buy for a while ago. Obviously they have features like scrambling that the cheap sets don't, but for just talking between cars on laning trips would these be good enough?
A lot of guys with defenders seem to use CB, but there seems to be lot more cost and complication involved in that - is PMR a sensible choice?
I've been using a cheap set of BT PMR's for some years that have been fine, but are on their last legs now. I get 8km easily out of them, but then I am usually at 3000ft
I was going to spend a bit more on some professional PMR's but decided against it in the end. The difference in price really doesn't justify any increase in performace. All are limited in power by the same standards in any case.
I've bought a set of the Lidl's (thanks for the heads up) so I'll see how we go.

Personally I have used both but prefer CB (seem to get better coverage), I borrowed a PMR from Andy at the weekend, and we certainly weren't hearing all the comms that going on.D3 HSE MY05 Auto
Expo Rack, Club MTR, LR Spots, A Bar, Light Guards, GNVP Sump Guard, GNVP Ladder, Cup Holders, RLD A Bar brackets. Disco3Club stickers, Aux power on Mod
Boxes can say whatever they like and as Andy says, 8km is easy when you are at 3000ft.
Typically, if the box says XXkm range, then I suggest you substitute '00m' for 'Km'. In other words, if it says 8km then you will probably find an effective range of 800m
These things are not 'proper radios' with engineered transmit and receive circuits. They are cheap Chinese PCBs in a plastic case designed to be useful toys.
If you only need to speak to someone you can physically see with the naked eye then they are perfectly fine. However, once you put them into two separate vehicles and want to speak a few streets apart then you are going to run into trouble.
Horses for courses IMO and if I only wanted to talk across a football pitch then I'd be happy using the cheep things. By the same token, if I wanted to drive across a football pitch then I'd be happy with a Nissan Micra, but I wouldn't expect it to keep up with a D3 on a LR experience day. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

Let us know how you get on with them Andy. Like a lot of LIDL stuff, they appear every now and then so if someone misses them this time they're likely to be back on their shelves sooner or later. I've certainly seen them in there before.Clubs Mantec, Tasmods, LEDS, AT2s on 18s, Maxxis Bighorns on 17s, Remote FBH, BAS. we had a set of Motorola radios when I worked for a national merchant about 5 years ago, the rep whjo sold them to us said they had a long range on them.
They were not very good at all. Had a job to communicate from one end of the yard to the other and it would have been only about 500 mtrs
Also found the batteries only lasted about 3 - 4 hoursI have something to say! It's better to burn out... than to fade away!
