Is it possible for me to put a switch in a video cable?
About to install a rear view camera, and a tow ball camera but plan to put a switch in the video cable to switch the screen input between the two.
Any thoughts?

Looks like that is a yes!
I have just bought a standard electrical on off on switch, rather than an av multi port, so was going to give that a go.
Will report back!

Andy + Matt, I've been looking into this for a few weeks and the problem appears to be the shear size of the domestic AV switching boxes.
I need an AV switch for selecting between forward and reverse cameras and the best I can find is this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cheap-4-Way-Audi...3cc84fbe61.
It's reasonably compact but check E-Bay, there are others.
This also seems quite promising as it's got a remote but again the size may be a problem. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDIO-TV-DVD-CAM...3a6a67c35b.
It might be promising though if it could be reduced in size. Needs it's own power supply though. Mods:

Cheers Narpy.
It all looks do-able just need to get it all looking neat and still being able to operate the switch. Like the idea of a remote controlled one but the remote still needs to "see" the unit so still not ideal. I'm sure someone will be along soon with the answer. Really want something I can just plug everything into and not start butchering stuff.

Thanks Narpy.
I might have a go at making one myself first of all - see how it goes.

I toyed with making one myself, using a switch but really wanted something I could just plug and play too.
I think I'll be buying the first link and redesigning it somewhat.
I'm starting to think the ash tray will be getting ripped out and that rotary switch cobbled to the front or under the gap below the ash tray. Box is 4inches wide so just might be small enough to fit in some place if that doesn't work, failing that, it's in the top glove box. Mods:

Just ordered a reverse camera to fit in place of a number plate light. has anyone done this and what problems could i encounter ? my d3 has had a computer screen fitted which has a DVD satnav gadget under the passenger seat.. Do i plug the camera straight into this ? do I need something else to make it work.?

To make it come up onto the satnav screen automatically, you need a GVIF unit - HIDS4U is your friend Mark.
2006, D3 SE Auto - gone but not forgotten.
2014 BMW 530d M Sport Tourer.

You can fit a camera without a GVIF unit, if you have the sat nav screen, you can do the Range Rover switch mod that Wiggs has posted a topic on.It shows you which wire to cut. I have just done this and fitted a toggle switch so if needed I can switch between D3 or RR software mode.
You can then buy a special cable from the shop on the forum and connect your AV cable from the camera to that, several threads on here how to do it. You also have to go into the secret screen to activate the camera, and when in RR mode it will turn on the camera when you select reverse.

The possibility of a different approach to the problem, connect the cameras up with a 'Y' splitter on the ariel input and put a switch on the power feed to the cameras so that only one camera can be switched on by choice. Test it on a model set up before installing. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
