Halfords... I should have listened to you all... |
|
Had service done, knew pads were getting low.
You all said dont go to Halfords Auto Centre... I foolishly thought, surly they cant mess that up. Saw other LR's they were working on, they had all the diagnostic gubbings etc so thought it would be OK.
Pads front and back done.
Got it home, all the EPB lights, HDC fault, the common nightmare, although admittedly I had heard a bit of noise at the back on and off when using the EPB, only a very few times. Next day not so bad, but then days after that got progressively worse with the suspension dropping etc. Complained to Halfords workshop, no joy. Complained to HQ, they got the workshop to call me and get it back in. I also pointed out that I was getting a strange grating noise front off-side wheel area when breaking, only occasionally, since they did the pads. They typically explained that for the pads they dont have to touch the handbrake and there's nothing they can do, it shows EPB motor fault, go back to Land Rover. They said the grating on the wheel was 'pads bedding in' (BS)
While looking around for a good quality non-dealer specialist the suspension kept dropping so much that I then got suspension faults and it wouldnt rise up at all. MOT due so had to get it done and booked it into a big proper LR specialist in Chertsey. They are LR/Jaguar exporters etc and have a service centre.
All good it seemed until of course I expected it to fail the MOT, but it failed on 1 tyre, the other three just on the boarder so that's £600 minimum. On top of the cam belt needing changing £550. Play in the steering and bushes neding replacing £300-500 but it also failed on an ABS fault. That's a new one, never had one until Halfords went near my beloved. They found a cable twisted and so the sleeve had split and it was causing an electrical problem near the ABS sensor. May explain the grating which may have been ABS kicking in on that wheel.
I asked, have you fixed the EPB or suspension?.... "no, weve spent most of the day fault-finding but it needs a new compressor I'm afraid, it's gone". I've never had a problem at all with the suspension..... before Halfords touched it 2 weeks ago... the EPB they said, they hope wont need a new motor, but it needs stripping down and cleaning out, may be one of the handbrake shoes.
I said to the guy, that maybe a box of matches would be cheaper!
So, now on top of them telling me they can't fit me in for over a week, they cant give me the prices until the morning so i now have to spend another depressed evening wondering how much this lots likely to cost.
Next time I promise I will listen! Nov 04 D3 TDV6 HSE Java Black

Sounds like you've had a rough time of it, the abs wire may have been disturbed when fitting new pad sensor if it was passenger front? The suspension and EPB issue may be totally un related and although I'm not sticking up for halfords I think it may have been nothing to do with them, you said yourself the EPB was noisy before it even went in there. I have had a d3 in the past in for a service and when I dropped it off the ramp and started it up the suspension began to self level and "bong suspension fault normal height only" the compressor must have been weak and putting it up and down on the ramp finished it off.
Hope everything gets sorted ASAP though

I know a guy in battersea that is good. Ex landrover mechanic and is a hell of a lot cheaper than a main dealer, he also has
The proper diagnostics there.

I would get all the work done, then send the bill to Halfords head office. Obviously not everything was caused by Halfords so just highlight what was.
I will never use Kwik fit either. You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

Hello guys. Thought this one would pull you out of the woodwork
I know. You're all right. Of course you too Geoff. But, I did ask for a rough quote and didn't hear anything and thought you were just put off me not have enough cash to fix everything!, but looking back I maybe didn't really make it clear I was looking for a quote and you couldn't have quoted without seeng the car anyway.
Ah, if I can get the tyres for 600ish, the compressor and ABS wire and EPB clean out for 600 then I can raid the kids savings and then at least I'll have the worse culprits out of the way. Then just cam belt etc etc etc... Nov 04 D3 TDV6 HSE Java Black

Sorry to hear about your pain, couldn't resist.
If you would care for a drive down the M3 I can fix you up with a set of 18" wheels with legal tyres on (3 or 4mm) for a reasonable offer. might be able to help with some of the other things? Paul Redding

Jim
like i said about your service cash is never the problem always willing to help where i can
EPB should be just clean and adjust compressor i,m not to sure its fecked to be honest ,speed sensor could be a red herring like I've just found out on Natc car
spent all day on it turned out to be badly calibrated suspension
