Clunking and thud from driveline (D4) |
|
My D4 Has now done 50K and in the last few thousand has developed a clunk or thud through the driveline. I can reproduce on a flat road by taking foot off (sometimes that alone produces a thud) then when reapplying power get a thud which feels like it's coming from the centre underneath (transmission). Rocking the foot on and off the power produces the thud at will. Took it to a Perth dealer who drove it and claims it is normal and that this is what D4s do.
Has anyone else out there had this experience? I have done about 16K of towing. Any thoughts appreciated. Land Rover Series IIA 1967

Get them to check the rear driveshaft centre bus/bearing there was an issue with early D4s where the bracket would fail TSB for it (recall in UK) Put another bracket over the top if not broken if broken then new. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Might a transfer case calibration help? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

LR Oz did similar with the oil on servo and the HP fuel pump recalls; more than two years after they had recalls overseas. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Not resolved, just learned to live with it. Though the dealer did tell me about a month ago that LR Australia are aware of the "problem" and are trying a few fixes. One thought is the transmission fluid may not be totally suited to our hot climate while there is some other theory about the torque converter. I got sick of it in the end and gave up coz overall I still have a great car. My wife has a VW but that's another story! Land Rover Series IIA 1967

Hi Caver, would recalibration of the main transmission also do the transfer box or are they all together in an integrated unit? I ask because I have had the transmission recalibration done and made no difference. Land Rover Series IIA 1967

Different I think. Transmission (auto box) calibration as I understand it just resets the adaptive shifts to factory settings.
Needs Faultmate, Autologic or IDS. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Well, just had the transmission mega flush, hoping that it might improve the clunking. Have now set up chain reaction of problems. Since flush box has let me down twice with loss of drive when selected, locking me out of reverse and locking into park. Error code is "P0798 Pressure control solenoid C electrical". DTC indicates possible fix is new TCM. Just taken it back to trans shop and they have agreed to replace the solenoid at their cost. The only thing that went wrong during flush is that ZF allegedly supplied a distorted filter which caused problems when they put it back together. Apparently with the filter and pan change on the D4 the new filter has to go right up in the valve block with limited tolerances. Am hoping now they don't disturb anything else changing the solenoid as am supposed to be headind to the NW on the weekend. Anyone else had problems withs trans solenoids (e.g. a known fault?) or TCMs? Land Rover Series IIA 1967

Sounds like they cocked up somehow.
Make sure they repair properly at their cost and warranty the repairs. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
