East to West to avoid any damage mid (ish) way, as you will be heading down a slight incline and gravity will be the path of least resistance, and potential damage after the rain.

Other than that a lovely drive (on a clear day) Thumbs Up

I think we have had the clear day for this year already George Whistle

As George says East to west is probably the best way, there is a speeded up video of it HERE from when I did it a couple of years ago (In the opposite direction). The section which starts at 4m10s is now pretty washed out and is much easier to come down it that try to get up it. Also the lane tends to hold a lot of water in places as can be seen on the video but it is a cracking lane and very scenic Thumbs Up

Here's a photo taken on it earlier this year

Ian, great shots as ever. I was up there this weekend, alas the weather was a tad wet.

I'm going to be up near Grasmere in August, never been off-road, is this route suitable for a beginner, or is there somewhere easier/shorter?

Galwaygreen, no permission but if it is to be your first foray onto a greenlane I would advise you to go with someone who knows the route and has experience. The general rule is never go alone.
If I go out it is a minimum of 3, if one vehicle gets stuck and so does a second trying to recover then you have a third to go for assistance. It can even take 2 vehicle to pull a D3 out of a ditch Shocked
Have a look here for starters: http://www.glass-uk.org/
While the Old Coach Road may be a straight forward lane expect the unexpected from punctures to breakdowns, AA or RAC will not venture off the tarmac to make a recovery. Even misjudging the track and ending up in a ditch can spoil your day if you are on you own and without recovery gear.
I am sure if folk want a greenlane excursion some kind sole will arrange one, you only have to ask Whistle

Sheepy, I too will be up in August from the 12 for 12 days.

I like you have never been off road and would like to give it a try. Anyone experienced who can show us the ropes in the area? Also is there a "must have" kit list before you leave the black stuff?

Cheers Smile
