whats wrong with the rack ? is it maybe the inner tie rods that need replacing rather than the rack? also the lower steering colum is known for problems again showing as the rack

thanks for responding Piper5
local indie said that track rod ends, etc etc were all ok and it was the rack (heavy knock over rough terrain and speed bumps)
not sure how to verify his findings?learning to live with 2 troublesome LRs in Kenya without much help and a very low level of skills!

Never had a rack cause heavy knocking. Usually lower at wishbone bushes or arb bushes, is the steering heavy or notchy?

no probs with steering apart from the knocking....I guess i need to try another garage? or is there an easy way to check if it is wishbone bushes or arb bushes?learning to live with 2 troublesome LRs in Kenya without much help and a very low level of skills!

Arb bushes need to be checked on a ramp really but wishbone bushes can be check easily. Drive the vehicle at 15mph and dab your foot on and off the brakes if the noise is present the rear bushes are toasted

I've just cured a 'heavy knock' over bumps, by replacing my lower wishbones and one tie-rod

Had a good poke around today and it seems to me that the i can hear and feel a knock only on the offside rod that comes from the rack to the wheel. I can feel it by twisting the brake disc/hub assembly with both wheels off. Does that mean it is not the bushes mentioned above e.g. arb etc? Track rod end is new - so not that.????learning to live with 2 troublesome LRs in Kenya without much help and a very low level of skills!

Could be the track rod (bit the track rod end screws on to) very common problem and a dam site cheaper than a new rack
