I think I have mentioned before to reduce the likelihood of of an oil leak there is a tightening sequence for the sump bolts and have posted a copy below.

Somewhere on the web there is a PDF document you can print and tape to the underneath while you tighten, but I can't find it at the moment.

A copy is also in my gallery

You can also add some gasket sealer to help prevent a leak. I use permatex anaerobic gasket sealer. It won't harden into chunks that can break ff and clog your filter. I made the mistake of not replacing my mechatronic sleeve and now that is leaking ever so slightly Neutral I would highly recommend replacing that at the same time you replace the pan. It's an inexpensive part.

I thought the Mechatronic was one of the things you didn't want to disturb but as I am still yet to do my own filter what extra is involved?

Yes i am a bit worried about the same thing, but am sort of on my own down here for service items like this.

I have wonderedi if perhaps the best thing to do is just drain oil, refil then wait a couple weeks and do the same again, and perhaps do it again a couple of weks after that, as i guess this will freshen up the oil.

May not be the best solution but beter than just leaving it.

That document is for replacing the mechatronic itself, rather than just the sleeve. The sleeve isn't difficult to replace. You do have to drop the pan to do it, and it's only around $15 USD or so for the sleeve. Changing the fluid and pan wasn't a terribly difficult job, just make sure you have the right tools to get it done. I used a camping wire saw to cut the old filter tube off which allowed me to easily remove the stock pan and filter without having to jack the engine up as the service manual suggests. The other tool that is invaluable is a ratcheting box wrench that can hold the correct torx bit for the pan screws. You will need something like this to get to the 3 or 4 screws located directly above the cross members. The only other specialized tools I used was a good torque wrench in inch pounds and an infrared temp gun to measure fluid temp while following the ZF fill procedures.

The procedures for replacing the mechatronic sleeve while the pan is out is:

- Secure vehicle against rolling, secure wheels with wheel chocks.
- Drain transmission fluid and remove the transmission oil pan.
- Unlock and disconnect the vehicle connector from the transmission.
- Pull the sealing sleeve locking mechanism to the unlocked position.
The locking tab is located on the bottom of the mechatronic below
the sealing sleeve.
- Remove the sealing sleeve.
- Unlock the sealing sleeve locking mechanism and install the sealing sleeve with the locating tab
properly aligned with the mechatronic. Use transmission fluid to lubricate the seals for
installation. After the sleeve is properly seated, push the locking mechanism to the locked
position. Install the vehicle connector plug and check that the sleeve is properly seated. The
gap x should be between 2.5 to 3.0 mm.

I did my pan and there is no reason to change the sleeve unless its leaking and I have never known one to leak yet..
Just change the sump pan and make sure that you use a gasket sealent, I had a couple of bolts that leaked down the threads but this was soon rectified with some more sealant in the threads.

I did not remove anything other than the sump to change it.

I should have changed it as mine has a small leak. If you google "6hp26 mechatronic sleeve leak" you will find plenty of mention for this relatively common issue. I figure it's cheap insurance to install the updated sleeve, and will certainly be replacing mine next fluid change (or sooner if it gets worse).

I was wondering if the Ford 6 speed Automatic Transmission ZF6HP26 Gearbox is the same one used in the Discovery 3. It just that looking at the conversion kits they look the same.
In Australia the plastic version is $130 aus
the Steel conversion kits is $210 aus. (listed as an AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FORD FG TERRITORY 6 SPEED ZF METAL SUMP SERVICE KIT)
