A move to NZ might be on the cards , so my question is, would it be cost effective to import the D3 down under, I see that the Disco is a similar sought of price in NZ as it is here in the UK.
I don't want to sell my car for a heavy loss as I was planning on keeping her for quite awhile, but the same time I don't want to spend aload on the importing of it if it's not cost effective

Last time I looked it cost about NZD10,000 to ship a car from the UK, so if prices are roughly the same, you're down $10K, not to mention the automatic stigma a private import gets down there, which will add downward pressure on any subsequent asking price.

I imported a RR to NZ about 10 yrs ago and used an outfit called KARMAN which cost me about 5000.00NZ back then. They used refrigdge containers (without the fridge going) and filled the car with sacks of silica gel. Car arrived in great condition and all good. They even met me at Heathrow and picked the car up before I flew back to NZ. I think they were based somewhere round the North of the M25. Near enough 40 degrees South!!!

Hi Dave
Not sure if you have looked into the tax considerations of importing a car, I know that NZ seems to be a bit more free-market when it comes to this than Australia but over here there are serious tax impediments to importing cars, which is why a lot of grey market Japanese stuff comes in damaged (apparently they ship them as 'parts' and then fix them up).
Just an idea.
Cheers
Mat

I think I'm better off just selling it and then try and find one down under.

Dave,
By a strange coincidence, i was talking to someone about going to work in NZ yesterday, and the subject of shipping D3's came up.
I was told about £3k for a container (believe this approx equals $NZ 10,000?)
Don't forget that discos down under seem to be lower specced than here.
So the choice seems to be:
1) fill the container with possessions (not forgetting that UK tv's dont work down there)
or
2) take the D3
Hmmm .. ....
The Disco!!!
Dave. Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Why wouldnt the TVs work???? We are PAL system.... can you enlarge on this?
The lower spec largely seems to relate to sat nav etc.... there is no screen in centre of dash... just a shelf. I have installed a Garmin 276C there which can be taken out when needed, its chip changed and can display marine charts for use on the boat. Also I think there is/was a cock up with LR NZ and the rights to use mapping sofware... and so ... you cant... except on the Garmin..... Near enough 40 degrees South!!!

Re Tax Considerations:
NZ does not have many tax probs for importing cars as we do not try and protect any innefficient locally made Holdens and Fords like Australia do.
It also means that we have some of the cheapest 2nd hand cars in the world. My 05 D3 with 90000km on the clock would prob be on the yard for NZ$68000... if that is any help. Near enough 40 degrees South!!!

I think the best thing would be sell the car here, and then sort myself out with something over there.
Are there many used D3's for sale down there, or is it all Toyotas and Nissans, what are the dealers like for service costs and after sales service etc..
Cheers for the info Rich.
Regards
Dave.

The PAL in Aus is slightly different from the PAL in the UK. I assume that NZ is the same as Oz. I forget what the differences are, and what difference this makes on a modern set.
There is more than I can be bothered to read on this here:

Not that many 2nd hand d3s here.... maybe 10-15.... Only 4million people in the same land area as UK... but they are around as long as you not in a hurry...
Dealers are variable.... big places tend to be impersonal... smaller much more help....
Where in NZ you heading....??? Near enough 40 degrees South!!!

inefficient in OZ anyway, turns a good profit in NZ, and keeps an OZ business profitable and Australians in work Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?
