| Engaging reverse from cold |
|
Guys, I know I'm the poor man around here with a base manual but the thing nearly refuses to engage reverse when cold.Gentle persuasion has so far worked but the I'm getting more and more nervous. Is this normal or should I note to stealer? Seems fine when warm. Otherwise jus' luv the thing

had this problem last winter. Back to the dealers, gearbox out, and some adjustemnets, lubrication fixed it. I think there is a tech buletin for it.

I'm getting the same thing. Brute force and ignorance, the D3 does the rest.

Yup -had that one too.
Difficult reverse gear selection then progressed to involve forward gears. All sorted very easily under warrenty with new gearbox. Only issue was waiting 2-3/52 to get one Richard

Known issue, search the site and you should find the details, basically there's a part at the base of the gearstick that needs replacing actually involves replacing the whole stick as it's built in. Mine's been fine since it was done The End

I have the same thing. All I do is to get over this is either a) let the handbrake off and allow the disco to move a little, or b) engage first and just engage the clutch slightly. In both cases, the transmission is moved a little bit and the gear lever slides straight into reverse - no problem. I seem to recall exactly the same kind of issues on the Disco 2 I had, and for that matter the Isuzu Trooper I had a few years before. I definately would not force it into gear, which is sure not to do any good in the long run.
Don't think i'll bother the dealer with it, although I do have one or two other very minor things they can take a look at.

I find that on cold day's I'm having to go 2nd, 1st and then reverse, as it won't go into 1st (sometimes)to help line it up for reverse. Also when still cold I'm having problems at lights and junctions as it doesn't like going into (again sometimes) 1st, however after its warm the problem of selecting a low gear or reverse is very much reduced.  Brute force and ignorance, the D3 does the rest.

D'arkuk - you describe my problem perfectly. So far It's not totally refused to engage and shuffling between 2nd and 1st seems to help. Think I'll sit this one out until 1st service assuming it doesn't get worse and go armed with TSB.
PS - was your waxoyl a DIY od done professionally - any advice?
Guys - thanks for response cos a) I thought I was the only member with a manual and b) it's nice to be able to share a prob!

Hi Phil, it was a local body shop that I got to do the work, thay even fited the mantec sump guard (see group buy) on at the same time, buying one of those, now thats good advice. As for advice on you having yours waxoyl'd, all I can tell you is that I was working on the principal of: What will do more will do less.  Brute force and ignorance, the D3 does the rest.
