I thought I'd have a look at www.parkweb.vic.gov.au to see what tracks are still closed after the fires.
Take a look at this map.
http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/resources/mr...losure.pdf
The whole area (red hatching) is closed
The area we are planning on going into is just below Lake Eildon and to the right of Rubicon.
Unless this map is changed by our trip in March then we will need to revise the plan and look at another area.
I might give Parks a call to find out the likelihood of reopening.
Any other ideas for places to go not affected by the fires?

G,Day Chris, Simon & Tristan,
25th sounds great to Me. Last day of my annual leave. I don't want panel damage either. Already done 2 doors in at a cost of $400 for excess & threatened I'll lose rating 1 three weeks before Christmas last year.
A bloke I used to work with at the S.E.C. now runs 4wd trips into Gippy and has a book published (4 Wheel Driving Gippsland By Ron & Andrea Camier). The book lists many drives in Gippsland close to Melb. & further out I have 2nd ed. (2001) there may be later ed. Might be worth looking at in conjunction with D.S.E/ Parks Fire Maps.
If you are having trouble getting a hold of one get back to Me and I''ll arrange a loan of mine or see Ron and get you a copy. (I think Massaro Motors even sell it as Ron is a member of Gippsland Land Rover Owners Club. (He runs Defenders/ County's)).
Cheers David. Did you think I would leave you crying,
When there's room in my D3 for 7,
Climb in here Joe we'll soon be flying,
I can go just as fast with 7.

David, I got that book mid last year, so it should be a current ed. However, I just moved house and all the books are still packed - I'll rummage through boxes over the weekend and let you know (...dont they have a web site...).
OTOH the Mt Terrible area may be open by then - I'll ask some DSE & Parks guys I know for any "inside" info. Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

I was talking to one of the guys at work who is a CFA 4WD member and he is part of team that are assigned Huts to look after.
He was going to find out at the next monthly meeting from the Rangers what the go is.
He was telling me that DSE must check all tracks for potential dangers due to burnt trees and clear them before opening roads but also they will assess the area if further damage could be result from 4WD's then they will leave it closed until some regrowth establishes.
Let's hope the area we want to go is opened up.
If anyone get more information please post it here.
Thanks

Hi Chris,
Thanks for suggesting the idea and putting in the effort to organise this get together... It certainly helps some of us novices get off the tarmac and into the wild green yonder (even though slightly charred right now). Would love to come along with the family but the 25th is booked solid . Here's hoping the next one is doable for me...
take heaps of pics...
Cheers

I've realised I'm going to bea away camping with family on the 31/3-1/4 weekend - so 25/3 is looking unlikely at this stage - but we'll see - and then there's the next one...
Any of you guys going to the LROCV 4x4 show at Wandin next weekend?

Harry and Simon,
There will always be another trip on the agenda.
As for the Wandin show. I had not decided on going yet. I've been for the 2 years and it seems pretty much the same old thing. After going to the show I always end up buying something which doesn't make the handbrake too happy.
Are you going?

yes - we'll be there - my p/t interest (insert shameless plug...) 4x4intelligence.com.au looks like having a presence there - supporting the demo track... will be showing the capability of the D3 there too
Agreed - there's a lot of the same - but a good excuse to catch up with people etc too.
Anyone else going - come and say hello...

Gee the Disco 3 is a good car! Have I said that before?
Was up at Wandin 4wd Show out of Melbourne today - and towards the end of the day, after watching many many cars go round the demo "adventure park", some with finesse, some with 35-37" Simex or Boggers on, some easily, and some breaking things, and many taking several runs obstacles, rutted hilly little ascents etc..., Carly said "go on - take a run around with the D3"...
OK - I did - again and again and again - picking up a couple of passengers each run who are down there for a theme park experience or roller coaster... AND, gee it's a good car! Obviously avoiding the deep bog holes and the like, it just ambled around up and down - center diff locking as necess, traction control kicking in as needed, and made some of the harder obstacles look so easy!
And I'm much happier about steep entries/exits now that I've got the wheel out from underneath too - less damage to that expensive rubber... And the Mickey T's went well - only at road pressures too
All in a all - a fun day!
cheers,
Simon D3 - Buckingham Blue, SE, TDV6, 06 model; chipped; underbody armour; Mickey Thompson ATZ 275/65-18 AND MAXXIS Bighorn muddies; rear wheel carrier from 4x4intelligence.com; iPOD aux connection!
