Things every disco owner should have.... |

So i eventually got myself a disco (ill get some pictures in the next few days)
What are those things that every discovery owner should have? I did see a 150 pc toolset from halfords that i hear are highly rated around here. What other little accessories should I consider purchasing?

A decent 3 ton jack (lot have Clarke one... me incl) & some axle stands for when you need to use your 150 pc toolset Cheers Ian

A safe jack - ditch the LR one & replace it with a Sprinter.
A battery charger - a Ctek, with wiring on the D4 for easy connection, via the towing electrics or elsewhere.
A long breaker bar & socket to replace the LR supplied one, and facilitate wheel changing.
A compressor - Ring seems to be favoured.
RLD's spare wheel protector.
Search the forum for Sprinter, Ctek, Ring compressor etc..

just make sure you drive it a lot, then all you need is a big wallet for the fuel bill and it wont go wrong because parts have seized or perished !!
all you need is a tool kit the change the brake pads yourself (you'll save a few hundred quid on the first go).
and a good pair of shades 8) Duncan

for someone who has never even changed a tyre out on a vehicle. how difficult would a job like changing brake pads be?

Brake pads are very easy to do. You will need to push the pistons back inside the calipers when fitting new pads but this is easily done using a tool like this when used in conjunction with your old brake pads:

You may also need to bail out a bit of brake fluid from the reservoir if it's up against the maximum but this is also easily done using a large syringe.
The only other things you need to do this job are a decent socket set, torque wrench, copper grease, and a can of brake cleaner spray.

I'm not convinced every Land Rover owner needs a battery charger.
I've had my D3 from new and never had an issue with the battery in the last 6 years. My car gets used daily so I suppose that helps to some extent. I'm still on the original battery but would anticipate it will be ready for renewal before next winter comes.
EDIT: I see you have a D4, though, so yes you probably will need a battery charger as I understand the power management system is a bit on them.

RAC card (or equiv) with recovery. An absolute must.

Tell me about it, im trying to find something really basic to do first, I think perhaps taking the wheels off to give them a proper clean might be enough to familiarise myself with some of the tools, particularly the jack.
Oh i've ordered one of the sprinter jacks as recommended.

Don't use the jack that came with the car, it's for absolute emergencies only as is total pants, if not plain downright dangerous (it can fail and drop the car). Get a proper trolley jack with enough weight capacity and enough reach, used with axle stands far, far safer.
Oops, just seen the bit about the Sprinter jack, great minds think alike.
