Webasto ??

Probably covered this numerous times on here but can't find my answer, anyway here goes !

My heater sometimes takes three attempts to fire using remote control and then it runs normally, but the two attempts prior it is trying and the exhaust outlet does get warm but not hot !

And then other times i have to reset it by pulling the fuse.

The parameters are all what they should be below 5 degrees outside and engine cold !

And when it does start it is really smokey at the start but then it clears !
Once it has run its 20 minute cycle i can leave it for 10 mins or so i can then restart it and it fires up straight away !!

Q: Any one experienced this, do you think the glow plug could be coked up and require a clean ?

Is it easily serviced or is it a stealer job.

Any advice as normal greatly appreciated.

I take it you are using Bell Remote ?

Sounds like you need to change the complete chamber as the glow plug is not available seperate.

If the glow plug is going, then the burning chamber is also pretty coked up.

You can change it you self as long as you dont have 15 thumbs.

I have sorted it by switching it on 3-4 times a day sometimes immediately after it had switched off where it would allow and over the past week it seems to have cleaned its throat Very Happy
So now touch wood over the past couple of days it has been firing first time Thumbs Up

I think some others have discussed that periodically a cleansing is required and there is an option for this on the SDD/Testbook/faultmate/autologic and basically it makes the thing smoke like hell but cleans the chamber out by getting it as red hot as possible for as long as possible.

Well think its finally give up the ghost hasn't run now for 4 days and even when it was -2 Crying or Very sad

Ive tried resetting it pulling the fuse and even done a hard reset !

The fans come on in the car for a few seconds when i use the remote fob but the Webasto is lifeless Big Cry

So before i trip to the Stealers is there anything else i can try ?????

Its not good deicing with the scraper when you have been so used to my beloved Weeeeebassto doing it for you Big Cry Big Cry

There is a servicing kit available that was first issued as a TSB - not cheap but hopefully you are in warranty.

If not, the other option is clamping off the fuel line, removing the coolant lines and rejoining them together with a barbed coolant pipe connector and disconnect the wiring/intake/exhaust. Drop the whole thing of at a Webasto service place or take the thing apart and clean it yourself.

Not much to them really and removing them from the car whilst leaving it in a drivable state is pretty easy.

That sounds about right. Had one done for £44 at a truck place and another done for about £35 at the marina.

Thanks for that i have just took out a LR extended warranty will try them first !
if not will try your idea Robbie and strip it and see what i find, are the parts readily available, if they are required ?

Parts seem to be readily available. Minor hiccup when one of the Webasto agents said they would not touch it and that it had to be serviced by Land Rover as was an OEM item specific to the car. No such difficulty with anyone else.

Speaking to the bloke at the marina it became clear that these things are typically serviced every year when installed in boats and trucks. He was amazed that they sit in Land Rovers until they fail and was equally amazed at how many years they ran for before needing attention.

I've played with my own and had a couple serviced on behalf of others. None have required parts, only a good clean to remove the carbon. Considering that in the early days of the D3 Land Rover would just replace them for an eye-watering cost, if not in warranty, they have proved to be quite cheap to get running again.

Heres some pics for you from a customers I stripped down last week. I've changed quite a lot of FBH's now and would recommend what Robbie says about a service. Its one of those things that gets forgotten about in the summer months.
Parts are readily available from LR (not that expensive either) and sometimes a replacement chamber is a must. The glow plug can be bought separately, but its included with a new chamber so I find it best just to change the chamber. The new chambers now come with a built in diesel warmer which was not on the earlier models.
They are easy to change and the FBH removal will take you about 45minutes first time (if you know how to take it out, send me a PM if you want more info).
Oh and a faultmate/diagnostic tool can reset the faults and pulling the fuse resets interlocks (interlocks are dependant upon what the problem is).
