I have been lucky enough to be one of the judges for the What Car?/Practical Caravan/C&CC tow car awards from its inception. To cut a long story short, I bought my D3 on the back of the testing. There were other vehicles that were as good in certain areas, and some better, but none was as good all round. The D4 was overall winner in 2010, and there's been nothing that's got close since. That's why I bought the D4! I look forward to driving a better all round tow vehicle because it will be truly exceptional!
I must admit that the TDV8 was pretty awesome, but at a huge cost (but then new D4's aren't exactly cheap!).

is the automatic system inbuilt on D3's & D4's that prevents the trailer pushing the towing vehicle when slowing down
it uses alternate use of individual brakes to slow the car even if the driver is accelerating.....its acronym evades me
but seeing & feeling it well demonstrated at the Coniston Hall LRE left its impression on me.
I wonder what other no LR vehicles have this ?BREXIT - done properly.

I had a badly loaded trailer, to say the trailer was wagging the dog was an understatement.
I knew it when loaded, but I was pressed for time and needed to get the material to the cabin.
My D3 saved my life that day, I tow alot so I am not exgagerating, any other motor would have had me off the road in a mountain side.
Due to the length and weight of the load, I rented a proper trailer for the next load the day after, best £100 I spent.
Reason I went with my own trailer as I wanted to save the £100 hire fee, looking back, my life is worth more than that, lesson learnt.

land rover make some of the best towcars in the world.
i have owned LR90. disco 200 . disco td5 . and now D3 .
but the D3 and no doubt D4 are a fantastic tow car.
we have towed all over france and uk with it (caravan club)
apart from the mpg (22-26) as it is auto i have no complaints
with it at all. its a 2005 which i have owned from new so we have been
together for a while.
27 foot Twin axle towed down to London from Yorkshire I lost 0.2 MPG. On way home I lost 0.0 MPG
What do you get normally??

Personally I average 22 mpg when towing. I usually travel at 56mph on motorways to try and avoid passing/being passed by trucks - it's less stress. I find I get slightly better mpg when driving on A roads.
With regards to "pushing on a bit" on the continent, the weight of the D3/D4 means that your outfit will be over the 3500kg limit, which in France means you are limited to 55mph on motorways and dual carriageways.MY12 D4 HSE Ipanema Sand

if i am towing on A roads it does between 20-22
but on long motorway stretches it will go up to 25-26
i usually tow at 65 mph on motorways but stick to the limit
on A roads.

Towed a 3000kgs boat during the recent snow and was amazes by how well it towed.
On a run my mpg goes down to 10mpg on a slight hill towing it.
You will be aware that around that towing speed the auto-gearbox will generally be dropping down to 5th on the motorway.
Can be a bit of false economy keeping the speed down if it's doing this, better then at 60 -65mph
But you'll know that
Maybe a change in driving style should be adopted.
Personally I think the disco is over rated. I tow a 1900Kg Fendt which is a little wider than a UK spec van. The extra drag is noticeable and should a slight gust catch it its more than sufficient to emphasise its weight and size through the high profile tyre at 44psi. Tow in sport box as when towing if the disco doesn't reach approx. 68mph it wont engage top gear thus you will perhaps screw your 5th or increase fuel comsumption. Uphills would definitely benefit from a torque increase and the factory detachable tow bar height is not good for most trailers.
I've towed with a Nissan patrol and its better. I do like the Disco but think for the money better tow cars are out there. Are they as good all round? Well probably doubtful. Coupled with all the common faults and very high maintenance costs had I a slightly lighter caravan then I would perhaps sell it on. I have been naughty and towed my van with a Renault Traffic 115ps and were it not for the load against the engine I really would know the caravan was hitched.
One more thing is the factory detach towbar develops wear and can be prone to pivoting causing knocks over bumps.
