It's a tough one. I have had my D3 for eight years from new and want to replace it with another Discovery but given I will keep it for 7+ years, that's a long time in a D4 when the D5 keeps winking at me and telling me it's better. I'm sitting tight for the next 24/30 months till I get the new shape.

On the new RRS launch, I got talking to one of the guys there.
Says early 2015 for the D5, all aluminium, hybrid option, same as the new RRS...
Wouldn't say what it looked like though
Might mean that the D4 will come down in price though My D3 Build Thread
I've heard that though the weight reduction is good for most things, its not good for towing and the 3500kg limit may be reduced.Mark.

Reducing the towing limit would not be good news , what is the towing limit on the new RRS as that may be an indicator.Jim

I personally would be loath to buy a new D5 if it had an aluminium chassis simply for the roads I sometimes travel on.
Metal fatigue is the major problem and although for the weight saving you get, the penalty is a lot shorter fatigue life as aluminium will work harden quickly and become very brittle, and dependent on the particular alloy, will over a period of time end up with stress corrosion and exfoliation. Nearly 50 years in aviation have taught me that aluminium is something to be treated with a lot of respect with regards to its major shortcomings.
It is these factors why aircraft have a cycle life on stress loaded structure.
I am very happy with my D4 and the limo like ride. I expect to cover at least 6000km in the next few weeks (50,000km in 18 months) and if I wanted fuel saving or a lighter vehicle I would have bought a cheaper and lighter car.
I wanted a D4, I could afford a D4, so I got one and I am sure it will last for a while without chassis fatigue, being steel and relatively heavy.Fuji White D4 2012. Reversing camera, E-diff, Hi-line sound, Xenon lights, ARB bullbar with Lightforce xenon lights and cargo barrier

If that was the case then the new RRS would have less than 3500kg but it DOESN'T!!!!!

Both the All New RR and RR Sport have a towing limit of 3500 kg despite the significant weight reduction over the previous models. There is little chance of LR reducing the towing limit on the next generation Discovery whenever we get to see it in public.

I guess this sort of stuff is always surrounded in secrecy, gossip and speculation. I may well be very wrong but the two senior JLR guys I spoke to a couple of weeks ago could still be heard laughing at the bar 10 minutes later when I mentioned a new full size Disco available to purchase in 2015.......
They also both said that LR knows keeping the D4 going for another three years is a tall ask so there is a plan to drip feed 'spy' shots and PR stuff to the press from late 2014 to keep interest up in the new model and to keep people guessing as to when. Also that sales/marketing had been told not to be any more specific than 'sometime in 2015' if anyone asks, which of course is for a launch date anyway and potentially a long way before deliveries would start.
The only other useful information that I squeezed out of them was that as yet the styling isn't fully signed off and there are no running prototypes in existence (for the full size version). They were also cross that resource had been pulled off full size Disco replacement to accelerate Evoke convertible development (which will come well before the big Disco)
Take it all with a pinch of salt if you like, only repeating what I was told.

Being in the states, I am so glad that I bought a 2013. Last year of the 5.0 V8. 2014 brings the lower powered SC V6. Even if it did have the same power, its not going to feel the same. 40mph at 1800 rpm and plenty of torque is a great feeling.
I think it has the same tow rating, but don't quote me on that. I don't see how it can practically tow as well with less torque/hp. I needed something that could tow and do it well. My boat on its tandem trailer and 57 us gal fuel is at least 6500 lbs.

2014 Discovery is going to be around for a couple of years before it is replaced, I'd be surprised (but happy) if we see a new Discovery much before 2016.
