Gearbox oil change, advice needed
Advice please chaps, if i change the oil in an 05MY D3 gearbox, is the torque converter oil separate? Or does that get changed with a normal change of gearbox fluid?

The main box oil is what's in the torque converter, I just finished a double flush Saturday, going to run the D3 for a week and repeat, car didn't feel any different however the fuel consumption has improved.

no
according to topix the torque converter is a sealed non serviceable unit.

Unless we are talking at cross purposes the torque converter uses the same oil as the rest of the automatic transmission. The dry fill for a new transmission is about 9.5l litres but come a fluid change about 5.5 litres is stuck in the torque converter, so only 4 litres is drained and topped-up.
To change more fluid you need to do more than one oil change (aka double flush) or use a dialysis machine (aka mega-flush).
Apologies if I have the wrong end of the stick but 'sealed for life' and 'maintenance free' in LR speak is 'as long as you write-off you car every 10 years or 150,000 miles'. In my opinion the gearbox oil needs replacing every 80,000 miles or so.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

So, how does one change the fluid in a torque converter? Is there an inspection panel that can be removed to drain the torque converter as i here about lots of rev fluctuation issues on this forum which is attributed to the torque converter... Now it's suggested on here that a change of fluid/double fluid change or megaflush will help/cure this issue... How so if the torque converter is a sealed non serviceable item? Very confusing...15.5MY XS in Corris Grey with Black & Almond leather

Yes the torque converter uses the same oil as the gear box. The gearbox has an oil pump that pumps the oil around the gearbox and into the torque converter.
So, when you drain the gearbox oil, a lot of oil is still in the torque converter, hence a double flush is needed to make sure that the old oil left in the gearbox casings and the torque converter are mixed up with new oil. The only way to drain oil from the torque converter is to remove the gearbox, remove the converter and tip it up to drain the oil. But even then you'll not get it all out.
My advice is to not worry about the converter and just change the gearbox oil, refill, drive around as normal for a week then drain and refill again. You guys are gonna be busier than a test bench in a plunger factory!

I believe I have the wrong on of the stick so my apologies. further reading of the manual also tells you to drain the remaining fluid from the converter when removed from the gearbox so LR speak has mislead me . when someone says sealed I assume that it is sealed, non servieable I can understand. so it works as a conventional converter. some of the oil may remain in the oil cooler also but using this method will remove more oil from the tranny. not sure what this will do to the pump in the gearbox though.

Changed the fluid twice today and did the filter (which was fun ) and am pleased to report the hunting/rev counter fluctuations are now sorted Thanks to you all for help and for previous posts on how to change the sump/filter (I'de have been stuck without reading previous posts on "how to")
Changed ARB bushes whilst there so now can report a faultless D3
