You bought the car before they changed the company green policy - tough on them. If they want to be green make sure they pay you compensation. If they don't I'll send 10 around!

That is so sad Andy Big Cry I can't believe your employer is so unreasonable. Just doesn't seem fair.
I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

Standard practice is to provide 4 weeks notice of a change of contract terms (depending on your contract), but generally if it affects a greater number of employees, then a consulation period is recommended (although not legally required).

For the future as I understand it, companies are required to consult with thier employees (or their representatives) on any changes to working conditions in advance of making the changes. Something Similar to the 'Works Councils' that the French are so keen on!

Aside from that, I agree with one of the previous points, that they put the rules in force after you chose your car. Do you have a cash allowance renewal date (usually every three years). I would say that they would have to stick to those terms. It's not that your company DOESN'T have a policy for higher engined cars, it's that they WANT to change it as your boss says it's costing too much money..... 2 totally different issues & I can't believe you're changing that easily

Can you really see your CEO changing to a Prius? I've a feeling that he may turn up from time to time (IF he changes it) but I bet he'll have a plethora of other cars to choose from that won't be affected.

You could always ensure they know abouit the 10 year 're-cycle' issue of the Prius & then see if it's as bad as they said it was..... (but let's not get off topic too far.....)

Take the 14p mileage allowance and tell them this car was bought before the new green policy and that if they want you to change the car they have to compensate you fro firstly the loss you took on the old D3 and secondly the loss on this D3. Once they agree to that I will buy the G4 D3 off you fro £500. Sorted.

just wait until the first time the carpark is covered in snow....they'll want you and your D3 then 8)
The company I work for (up until 1600 tomorrow) has an opt-out policy which enables me to use my D3 even though the banding on max. engine size is the same as yours and I don't think they can enforce a choice of vehicle on you as long as it meets the minimum 'fit for purpose' requirements

Guys thanks for all the advice. The company I work for are brilliant and I have no gripe with them at all, they look after me very well indeed. It is just bad timing really, they made a special provision for me whan I joined and allowed me to take the extra money rather than a company car and I am the only person who does this (can't see the point of a company car with current tax rules) this therefore casts me into the spotlight and my fuel expenditure is already much higher then most others even when I ran the TDV6.

I could fight them over this but do I really need the aggro? If I can sell the G4 on for what I paid for it then there is no real loss although I will miss it.

Or buy a knackered old car which you simply use for work and jump into the D3 when no one's looking!

yer, fight it! if they've already got the allowances in place, it shows flexibility that you can manipulate in your favour - you don't want to be D3-less twice Shocked Shocked Big Cry

That's what I'd do too. I mean, other than the cc, do you have to declare what your car is?

What I'm stuck with here is that your company is willing to pay x pence a mile surely you take the highest rate and subsidise the rest. If the company doesn't own the car they can't tell you what to drive.

Tell us the truth - what's wrong with the G4? Is it knackered?

Your employer has failed to give a you reasonable consultation period by bringing in a fundamental change without notice for which you have now been penalised. They should come to some agreement with you to compensate you for your 'technical' loss or provide you with the means to bring you within the policy the have applied. If you feel that you are out of pocket I would raise this a via a formal grievence.
