Rubber strip - front grill

Hi All,

After a decent bit of off roading and wading over the weekend, noticed a rubber strip protruding through the bottom rung of the front grill on my disco 3. Strip is approx 10 cm wide and probably approx 70 cm long. Does anyone know what it is and whether it is essential to the well being of he car? (currently sitting in the boot...so i hope not!)
