6 glow plugs gone on a 57 plate, 100k miles? |
|
Had my 57 plate GS into main dealer today to have starting issues diagnosed (Struggling to fire when below zero, lumpy when cold and stink of oil and blue smoke, runs sweet when warm) I pretty much though she'd lost maybe 1 or 2 glow plugs. But they came back with, all 6 are shot and the warranty are covering them, BONUS. Is it common for all 6 to go, I thought it would never start with all 6 gone, but it does?
Regards Martin

I'll ask them to check today, don't want it to burn the new ones out again too soon! Spole to them last night and they'd got 5 out of the 6 out fine, just hoping the last one comes out this morning ok.

Is there any way of diagnosing if or which glowplugs have failed?
Mine's struggling to start in sub-zero temperatures, but just had its 105k service and nothing mentioned by the stealer. Barney

Never worked on a TDV6 so don't know how/where the glow plugs are located but on other diesels, as long as you can get to and disconnect the wire from each individual glow plug, using a simple test lead onto the glow plug terminal will tell you whether the plug is working or not without removal. Just connect the test lamp to the battery positive terminal and put the probe on the electrical contact of the now disconnected glow plug. If it lights up, you have a complete circuit and it's ok.

I have had this problem for nearly 2 years now, LR, Indies and my own engineers here at DEUTZ (inventor of 4 stroke cycle) and none can find route cause of the problem.
Had new Heavy duty battery, all plugs changed (very costly as they had sheared and had to be drilled out - body off job), new charger (it failed anyway), had all plugs rechecked, injector leaks fixed, new engine map from LR and soon as it drops below 0deg, it is a pig to start with the smoke etc etc. At or above 0 perfect start.
Good luck with new plugs but do not count on it - I have seen a few similar threads on this issue - one very funny one from France describing his embarrasment on leaving ski slopes in his €60k+ purchase creating noise & clouds of smoke and Twingo's starting 1st time and driving off with their snow chains.
If it helps I find if I allow engine check / glow plug lamp to cycle 2 or 3 times and hold the cranking, when it starts to fire give a little throttle, no sudden peddle movements it usually does the trick. If you hear of a fix please let me know. The pre-heater at Bell auto's looks good but by the time I look into doing it mild weather comes again.
Forecast is for mild weather come weekend.

I have suffered this embarrassment while skiing in Austria - the noise of my D3 desperately trying to fire echoing around the resort, and the road on which the lodge was filling with smoke....as my FIL (who is NOT a LR fan in the slightest) just sparks up his Mazda6 estate and pootles off down the road with a massive grin on his face
Glow plugs sorted mine though, at a cost in excess of £2000. 2014 D4 XS
