LR Technical Advice

Is there anyway these days to get hold of technical advice from Land Rover these days.

I have tried their customer hlepline but they weren't and told me to p*ss off and stop bothering them. The delaer can't answer the question either, surely they are able to contact Land Rover?

Any help appreciated as my Insurance Company wants the answer Very Happy

...in which case, here goes Confused

How do they work out the tyre load rating? what does it actually mean? and what is the significance of it.(is it at all related to the tyre speed rating (i.e. can one drive the other?) or is that an entirely separate stand alone rating)

....in nice simple clear language please as I haven't managed to get a straight answer yet..

Mysterious or what?

...but many thanks none the less for any forthcoming clarity

Very Happy

The load rating is quite simply the index reference number that equates to a standard load that a tyre must be able to carry. In the case of the D3 it is about 1,000kg per corner, which equates to a rating of ~110.

Insurance companies can take a keen interest in tyres fitted to a vehicle, where tyre failure has, or could have, contributed to an accident - fault or no fault. A tyre, in most cases either a cheap alternative or where a "cool" low profile alternative is fitted, may not be physically and safely able to withstand the weight of the vehicle.

Further, whilst a minor underating of the load factor for on road tyres will probably not cause any problems, take the vehicle off road, and you will put considerable additional load on tyres, which may fail as a result.

Thanks for that winger, all makes sense

but what I am really after is something "authorative" (no offence intended) preferably on "Land Rover headed paper" (or similar) that I can show the insurance company?

I don't really wish to say more on a public forum but it is in support of something.

Cheers

The required minimum load ratings are shown in the handbook, run with anything lower and your insurance is probably void.

I know (from our conversations) what you are talking about Spotter, and the rule of thumb I would apply is this:

When you take out insurance, you are always asked if the vehicle has been modified (ie, not standard), as the insurer is trying to work out his risk. If you have "non-standard" items, especially around performance and/or safety, they may cover you and charge extra. Load rating of tyres, would in my mind constitute a safety issue. Its one of the reasons I didn't go for 20" alloys, as at the time I couldnt find any tyres rated at 111.

I know the RRS runs 106/107 load rated tyres. Is it that much lighter?

Thanks Al, yes you know the story, I am trying to put my case together for retcification and I agree entirely with the safety aspects.....it is just getting something written down or a view from technical guys actually from Land Rover as obviously the tyre people distance themselves and refer you back to Land Rover!!

Hopefully i will learn something out of this Shocked

cheers

Would LRCS not even confirm in writting the same info as is in the handbook, ie, 111 load rating.

What happened to one of our member's RRS tyres offroading in peaks - twice!! Shocked Lickily he had 2 spares!

Our local stealer is selling a D3 with RRS HSE rims & tyres (107 rating I think), sales guy not interested when I pointed to them & said that the tyres are not weight rated for a D3. Rolling Eyes
