Servicing by independant.

Hi,

My local mechanic who looks after my old Defender says that he has the computer that will enable him to service my Disco 3.

Should I let him? I'm tempted, but what are the pitfalls?

He's £20.00 per hour BTW!

I have wondered about this for the future (post warranty) as my local 'land rover specialist' has actually been fromed by the top three mechanics from the franchised dealer down the road. They tell me that they have access to all the LR stuff and that they can even maintain the warranty. However, I'm always reluctant to let a new car go to an independant. However, after the three years, there is no question that I would use them.

EU rules mean that you don't have to have the vehicle serviced by the manufacturer to maintain the warranty in its entirety. If you have a good independent, and despite what the handbook may say, provided that the alternative confirms that they can do warranty work you should be fine. Not sure that this applies to the anti-corrosion warranty, however.

Would it affect LRAssist? Is there a clause that says you only get LRA if serviced by an authorised dealer?

Adding to Winger's Zen like post... As long as the mechanic uses LR approved or original parts, follows LR service and repair guidelines, warranty should be covered.

I'm going to let my local chap do the service. Will he need to re-set the service indicator?

Where can I find what needs to be done?

He has a snap on unit that states in the paperwork:

Extended coverage including 2005 Land Rovers and the ability to reset the service indicator.
