Load screech from rear off-side when switching off engine |
|
Hi Can anyone help please, with likely cause and possible fix (will it hurt the pocket?)?
Subject about covers it, however it is not every time, I have 4 or 5 instances in last 4 weeks, each time after only just a short journey approx 2 miles. But not on every occaision.
Sound is horrible (akin to the old fisherman in Jaws scratching the blackboard but loader), lasts for about 4 or 5 seconds.
Sure its from the rear drivers side but so awful I may be wrong.
Vehicle details - 54 plate 2.7 Diesel Disco 3, I have had since new on approx 118k miles
Any ideas? Suspension compressor issue maybe?

Sounds like you have an EPB screamer, when you turn the engine off the park brake engages automatically, epb motor when its on its way out starts to overwind, hence the screech. If you apply and release the epb whilst engine is running, does it do it?

Might be for manual but not auto. If it's flat then could just park in P and not use EPB and so avoid screech?

Your all very quick off the mark, have I entered the MATRIX.
Anyway after doing the search as suggested it sounds like the EPB, I will do the on off check with engine running and Red light seems to have behaved differently of late but never really thought much about it.
It is an Auto, so yes it applies itself.
Any ideas how long I have before it fails or is it a clean out job?

B**dyhell Matty, spot on with your test ''If you apply and release the epb whilst engine is running, does it do it?''
It does , short clunks the first couple of times, 3rd time was the full monty and all my lamps came up and fault messages too (not done that before. Had everyone rushing to the office window too, wondering where the banshee was coming from.
Succesful diagnosis anyway, cheers!
Any idea as to whats required to fix and likely cost (I use a local Indy)
Thanks to all!

It may just need adjustment so will not take local indy long. Do it straight away...

Hi haroosh
Since new but I would not say too lucky, on EPB maybe but I have experianced the shearing off of glow plugs, body off and £2k bill and even yes with them changed I still experiance the cold start problem below 0 degrees. That is another Subject still under investigation for the last 2 years as mild weather keeps getting in the way and local Iceland store not happy with my Dumpy in their cold store.
Plus sticky steering wheel, compressor changes (fortunately that was during warranty), lots of bush and rod changes over the years.
But would not swap her, best motor I have ever owned despite her faults, must be have never kept another car beyond 3 years.
Anyway must call my Indy for a price and booking!
Cheers all, till the next issue

Cheers Discodunc handy manual you directed me too! That EPB running in procedure seems very intense.
Not attempting DIY though, I always create other jobs.
Anyway fault diagnosed at Indy's now, its nice to go in informed.

You may be lucky and just the shoes need replacing, but judging by the number of times it screeches, its likely the EPB Actuator is fubar'ed.
The bedding in procedure is pretty straightforward TBH.
You say your EPB comes on every time youtae the key out? On an auto...?
it shoiuld inly do that on a manual. I can switch that off for you as it would get annoying IMHO.

Sorry Bodsy
I had a computer free weekend, only noticed your response this morning.
Not every time, it happened maybe 4 or 5 times over last month - on Friday I decided to investigate on the site with great results - the test recommended was spot on. Its booked in Thursday, the rear pads need changing anyway so will get done in one hit.
Leaving the EPC off for time being, although sometimes forget, you get programmed.
Cheers!
