| Funny throbbing noise / reverberating noise |

I seem to get a funny noise that sounds like a feint throbbing / reverberating noise when my Disco 3 gets to about 45mpg. (The nearest noise I can compare it to, is when 2 large engines are meant to be running at the same speed but are slightly out of sync).
Can anyone explain what this might be? Sounds to me like something is rubbing? Perhaps a brake? I dont know, and its driving me mad. Plus I cant get my car to average more than 25mpg - I drive about 45 miles to work each day on pretty quiet roads, and I'm light footed.
Its not a loud noise, but now I've noticed it I'm going crazy.
Suggestions.

What mileage is the car? are you on worn Goodyear Wranglers. These can start to make odd noises in the later stages of their life.

21000 miles, and on original rubber. Doesnt seem to be tyre noise, as they are still in pretty good shape. Yes they are the GY Wrangler tyres.

Does sound like your Wranglers... even with good tread the wear will appear to be stepped / angled. This will cause noise. I'd describe it more akin to bearing wear noise.
One thing to try is to swap them front to back and see if the sound moves. Thats supposing the noise is predominately from the rear.
Has happened to 2 sets on my D3 so far and all sets of Wranglers on the 3 Freelander's I've had.
Could be something else too of course.

My TDV6 Auto, Pirelli Scorpians on 19" wheels with just over 15,000 miles is in at the dealer at the moment with exactly the same problem. I noticed it the day that I drove it off the forecourt. It went into the dealer the following week but was unable to diagnose after changing the wheels a couple of times. We decided to see if it was a "bedding in" thing that might go away with time. I am only averaging 22mpg when driving around town very light footed.
It has taken the dealer 18 months to finally diagnose. I have just been informed by the dealer that the differential is being replaced tomorrow (under warranty) although the dealer initially suspected the front brake discs.

As has been said above, most likely to be your tyres...however just in case here's another possibility: I did have an oscillation from my bonnet. The front left catch was slightly loose and allowed the whole bonnet to vibrate. I adjusted the rubber screw/bump stop under that side to tighten it up and that reverbrating noise (actually related to certain engine speed and load) went away. I found mine by very gently moving the bonnet corners up and down a minute amount - you could feel the click-click as it touched either side of the catch... Dr. Ian Malcolm:

How interesting. I had noticed that my front left bonnet catch does not always engage correctly too. If it doesn't engage there is a distinct bonnet wobble and lifting at certain speeds. The dealer says that the noise I am reporting is definately the front diff though.
