The D4 HSE dilemma
I know that up to 6% discount can be got on new models and that the highest depreciation occurs in the first two years. The options I would want are privacy glass, tow pack, full spare wheel and side steps (all can be retrofitted apart from the privacy glass - if I'm correct)
So what would you do and why - go for new or buy a low mileage two year old?

My first D3 I bought when it was 2 years old in 2009 and got it for a song. Sold it two years later and only lost 3k in depreciation (that won't happen again though!). Feeling a bit flush and over excited I bought a brand new MY2012 D4 in September 11. I have enjoyed every second of owning it. It is a thing of beauty and taken me and 'er indoors all over the country and into Europe in comfort, and been so useful time and time again.
But I look back now and ask myself what is it about the D4 that has kept me so happy? Trim, comfort, off road ability and capacity for putting stuff in the back - nothing that a used one wouldn't have done. Then I look at the depreciation I've suffered. When I take it off road I cringe and the mearest hint of bramble rash. When I load the back up with dirty shooting kit, or take yet more stuff down the tip I wince a bit more. I don't regret buying new, but for me I can only conclude that I would have had just as much enjoyment and more cash in the back pocket if I'd have bought a decent used D4 rather than new.

You should be able to get 7% I was offered 7.5% by Carrs in Truro, your dealer should match it.
You can get privacy glass retrofitted, just go to an experienced fitter who knows what tint the factory use. Will cost around £250 - £300 you would be amazed how many don't have the factory order privacy, just male sure you get a good fitter.8)
I didn't want to wait and ended up with their demo HSE with 3k miles on it.

If you've got the cash go for it, you can't beat the smell of a new car. Me?- I'm waiting for the D5 to come out, that's my excuse anyway. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I bought an ex LR company vehicles D4 HSE at just under 2 years old and only 14k miles. 30% less than a new one. Ok it is a 6 speed and not 8 and has less warranty left, but 15k - 16k saving buys a lot of other stuff. I specifically did not want privacy glass, and it was a job to find one in my preferred colour without it.Rich

I think LR are trying to pull a crafty one at the moment.....I was on the serious lookout for a reasonably new D4 until recently, but the prices of 12month old D4's was ridiculous (unless you own one of course )
It appeared to me that LR dealers were wanting the same money,12 months on,that a "reasonably" discounted new one would have cost
I have heard anecdotal evidence that people were being offered, near as dammit, straight swap new-for-old last year due to decent pre-owned shortages.
I believe that situation has changed slightly, but LR will argue that they are driven by market forces, and will only charge what people are willing to pay."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

The best online deal I have found for a straight HSE is 48290 and the cheapest approved delaer HSE 8 spd MY12 is 45950 and that one's done 20k. So the difference new to year old is about 2K. Most of the other low mileage are all about 48K!!

But that was the same when I got mine around 20 months ago.
Second hand ones at a near new price or a build wait of at least 3 months for a new one.
So when my Landmark was already sitting in stock and winking at me it was a no brainier.
Plus it gave me the same spec level (missing from the range) that my outgoing SE D3 had.
Oh, and I got a decent discount, trade-in and discounted extras.

I was looking at ex demo cars but ended up with a new one as I was offered some interest free credit which was not available on the second hand cars I was looking at. Ment the cost to change up front was the same just have to shell out a monthly payment for 18 months swung it for me Range Rover Sport Estate 2.0 P400e Hse Dynamic Black

I personally believe the "issue" is that JLR are on the crest of a wave at the moment........people will buy the current range of cars regardless......if you have decided that you must have a D4 as opposed to an X5 etc, then £1000 here or there will surely not dissuade you from your hearts desire.....
I don't know what the sales figures are for X5's at the moment, but Peter Vardy Edinburgh have a new xDrive 40D on their forecourt for approx £11-12k below list ie around £40k....I believe this is due to a new model coming out next year, but that is a serious discount in anybody's book....
When I asked about discounts at LR (due to aforementioned shortage of quality pre-owned) I was offered a small immediate discount (5%) with not much hint of anything else to come"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

It would be nice if JLR learnt something from Rolex and decided to restrict supply to ensure that second hand values hold firm.
Saying that they seem to be doing this by putting the new car prices up on a regular basis, well as long as it has the same affect I will be happy.
