see the cullin mountains - they're 3.6 billion years old, they are extinct volcanos. So you can see the shape of, some are so worn by time they just look old! Which they are: they are some of if not THE oldest on the planet (earth being 4.6billion years old)
I think they are a bit younger than that around 65-75 million yrs old. Started with the opening of the Atlantic.
Oldest rocks lie a bit further north, with Greenland having the oldest rocks in the world.
But it is some magical place if the weather is good get on the ridge but you may not have enough daylight. very special place and well worth a visit

If I remember my british tertiary geology correctly the Cullins are ~55Ma, intruded as part of the Tertiary volcanics. Some of the sediments near there are very old but not the Volcanics & associated intrusives & plutonics (deep stuff).

Agreed he SE is nice but it's a long, long way from the best bits. Best combined with a roadtrip of NE Ingerland.

If you like a whisky, and fancy a night of unashamed luxury (you may have to hide the credit card bill from the wife when you get home ) I can recommend the Torridon Hotel.... http://www.thetorridon.com/index.asp
Their whisky bar is the stuff of legend http://www.thetorridon.com/whiskybar.asp"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I stand corrected and defer to m'learned friends... the cuillin are 50-60m years old, but other bits of Skye are 1000 million... http://www.skye.co.uk/outdoors-geology.php. (Still pretty impressive stuff!)
