Lack of Power & Metal Tappety noise
Recently I've noticed a metal tappey noise coming from what seems like the front end of my D3. The noise gets louder when under throttle/acceleration, and more noticeably when climbing a hill and/or pulling a trailer
With the noise I've also no noticed a lack of power when at low revs/pulling off. Once to about the 2000rpm the car is more or less normal, and once up to normal driving speeds (30mph+) you cant hear the metal tappety noise, or feel a lack of power
Today really bought the problem to light. We were out with our 2 horses which are fairly heavy combined with the trailer. I came to hill that I would normally get up fine, but this time I had to change from 3rd, to 2nd, to 1st and eventually had to come to a complete stop and with the handbrake and put it into low range. The car just had no power. Foot competely to the floor on the accelerator and it ws just going to stall in all gears
THe lack of power is extemely more noticable when towing
I also think there is a whine under transmission and seem to get a jolt when coming off power
I've had previouslack of power symptoms in the past, and blanked off the EGR's and replaced the intercooled hose; both with BAS items which seemed to cure it back then
I also had the 105k service 2 or 3k miles ago
Can anyone help with whats happening, as it feel serious
Thanks
Ade

Hope the engine isn't loosing compression, and going to throw a rod or something. It's a risk driving it...I'd have it towed to the shop that did the timing chain, JMO.17 Discovery 5 HSE Si6, Fuji White on brown | 07 LR3 SE 4.4 Java Black on Alpaca

ignore - I just read the last bit of you description and reallised you already blanked of the EGRs - sorry, nothing further to addLRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Fuel filter? (doesn't explain the noise)
High Pressure Fuel Pump? (could definitely explain the noise and loss of power)
Turbo? (could possibly explain the noise, but not really a lack of power at low revs)
Did you get any error messages on the dash? Have you got any way of reading the fault codes?2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

The EGR's have been blanked for a good 18 months. Can they still affect engine running when blanked?
Providing they were blanked & the butterfly valve removed you should have no issues from them. I agree with PaulP's diagnosis - get HP Fuelpump & Turbo checkedLRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

No symbols are lit on the dash and no error messages are displayed
I've plugged in my Faultmate FCR and the only thing showing under engine management is P0405, which I think is EGR related. I assume this shows due to me blanking them off rather than fixing/replacing them

Could be blocked fuel filter and the aux belt tensioner failing causing the noise

Is the faultmate capable of showing the pressure in the fuel rail as that would aid in the diagnosis relating to the fuel pump/filter etc?
(My cheapo OBD reader shows the fuel rail pressure and even graphs if for you over other relevant data.)
You could expect fault P2290 with a blocked filter, or HP fuel pressure low.
I would be concerned that it was something related to the recent 105 mile service Mark.

pinking/knocking
do diesels get pinking?
under load and up hills could be pre-ignition
Or water in fuelIt is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

I'm not sure they are related, mine has had the tappety noise since I had it two years ago - just as you describe, and more noticable when towing - its been mentioned by many people on here and nobdofy has really come up with a cause.
Mine sufferred loss of power a year or so ago and it was fuel pump related. My guess would be fuel or turbo.

Could it be the front diff?
If you jack up both front wheels and put it into gear, should you bea able to rotate the wheels? Or should the transmission/diffs lock driveshafts due to it being in gear?

Yes you should be still able to rotate the wheels. Unlikely to be a faulty diff if it feels down on power.

Hi Ade,
Did you ever get to the bottom of this problem?
My 05 is showing exactly the same symptons as yours. After checking with LR, my local Indy advise me that this is because of the high pressure fuel pump.
